CHRISTIANA WILKINSON HORNSEY
My husband, Barry Jackson's Great Grandmother, Christiana Wilkinson Hornsey was born in Moortown, near Caistor in Lincolnshire according to Census records found and shown on the "Barrowcliffe/Dutton" family page. The picture on the left shows Christiana (seated) with her daughters Winifred (Barry's Grandmother) on the left and Phoebe on the right. A larger version can be seen by clicking on the photograph. To return to this page, just click the 'Back' button on the top left hand side of the screen.
Christiana's name however appears on Winifred's birth certificate (shown on the Barrowcliffe/Dutton link above) as "Christiana Dutton formerley Wilkinson". I have found details of her birth in Ancestry.com as Christiana Wilkinson Hornsey. She was born in 1847 in Lincolnshire and I now have a copy of her certificate, shown below.
On a family tree which we found amongst Barry's father's papers, her name is typed as Christianna Wilkinson (Hornsey) with Hornsey typed in brackets as shown, born Moortown, Lincs in 1845 it also states that her husband Thomas Dutton was also born in 1845, yet on the census information I have found Thomas is 2 years older than Christiana. Their marriage date is given as 18 November 1865 at Ilkeston; Christiana's parents were listed as Mary and William Hornsey. William Hornsey's parents were Ann and Mark Hornsey; Mark Hornsey's parents were Sarah and Joseph Hornsey - this gave me some clues for further research.
*Christiana's birth certificate has arrived (Oct 2005) and here are the details:

I was extremely fortunate to have received quite a lot of information regarding the Wilkinson family and family trees going back to the 1600s from a Wilkinson researcher named Alan J Wilkinson - if anyone is researching the WILKINSON surname in Lincolnshire, please contact Alan on Mary1W"at"aol.com (please substitute "at" with @).
I list below the information which relates to the ancestors of Christiana Wilkinson Hornsey:
In Nettleton: Robert Barkworth married Margaret Cowleham on 1 May 1673 - I think this is my husband Barry's 8 x Great Grandparents. The IGI has the marriage for Rob Barkworth to Margerit Cowleham on 1 May 1673 at Nettleton and shows a baptism for an Anne Barkworth in April 1675 at Nettleton - parents Robert and Margaret Barkworth.
In Walesby on 8 May 1705,
Robert and Margaret's daughter, Hannah Barkworth married Peter Wilkinson - found
on IGI; Hannah
was born abt 1680; Peter was born circa 1680 and died 1723 - Barry's 7 x
Great Grandparents![]()
Peter and Hannah Wilkinson's children were:
|
Elizabeth |
Mary |

Peter, 1715-1786 |
On 3 July 1740 in North Thoresby, Hannah and Peter Wilkinson's son Peter married Helen Greenfield; Helen was born in 1713. Barry's 6 x Great Grandparents
Peter and Helen Wilkinson's children were:
|
Thomas 1741-1802, married 1 Feb 1770 at North Thoresby, Elizabeth Crisp 1743-1781 |
Mary b1742; married 30 Apr 1761 at Nth Thoresby, William Nendick (b1732) |

| All baptised North Thoresby | |||
*Peter and Helen's third child, Robert Wilkinson married Christina Chambers on 17 May 1771 at Walesby; Robert was born in 1745 at North Thoresby and died in 1833 - Christina was born in South Willingham in 1746 and died in 1835. Robert and Christina are Wilkinson researcher, Alan's 4 x G Grandparents. If I've worked it out correctly Robert and Christina must also be Barry's 5 x Great Grandparents.
Robert and Christina Wilkinson's children were:
|
Mary 1772-1772 Baptized 23 Aug 1772 at Walesby |
Robert* baptised 23 May 1776 in Walesby |
Richard 1778-1823; baptized 9 Dec 1778 at Walesby |

John baptized 28 Aug 1790 in Walesby |
Christina b1790 |
Thomas baptised 8 Jun 1794 in Walesby |
Robert and Christina Wilkinson's second child was Robert Wilkinson*, baptized Walesby in 1776, died 1853; he married Mary Thistleton (1779-1852) of Scawby in 1800. **Alan's connection is Robert and Christina's 4th child, William who married Ann Lidget 1781-1851. Robert and Mary Wilkinson - Barry's 4 x Great Grandparents.
Alan has since found that William may have married twice - his second wife being Ann Gowshall - more evidence is required though as no death or burial has been found for Ann Wilkinson nee Lidget. Another Wilkinson descendant from William's marriage to Ann Lidget - Sandy Darker has contacted me with this information. Alan's connection is now thought to be William and Ann Gowshall.
Robert and Mary Wilkinson's children were:
|
Ann* |
Jane who married Thomas Westaby |
Christina 1814-1841 born South Kelsey; married Thomas Kendall in 1836 |
Robert and Mary Thistleton's child, Ann Wilkinson* was baptised 1803 in Claxby.
Ann married Mark Hornsey (born 1802) at St Nicholas, South Kelsey on 15 January 1824. Mark was the son of Joseph (1767-1860) and Sarah Hornsey (formerly Smith) 1776-1860; Mark and Ann's children are shown below.

Ann and Mark Hornsey's son, William was baptised at St Mary, South Kelsey on 6 May 1824 and William married Mary Buxton in 1844 in Nottinghamshire, their marriage certificate is shown further down this page. William and Mary Hornsey were Barry's 2 x Great Grandparents.
Alan wrote "Christina Wilkinson Hornsey baptised 25.12.1847 at South Kelsey, parents William and Mary Hornsey, abode Riverhead, occupation Labourer. The Riverhead is a spot in Moortown where the canal stopped - at this time Moortown had about 10 houses".
I received an email on 1 Dec 2006 from Steve Wilson who 'stumbled' upon my website by accident. He is also researching the Hornsey family and is descended from Mark and Ann's daughter Mary Ann Hornsey. Steve informed me that Mary Ann had married George Kennington of Brigg. They moved to Hull in the 1860's.
Barry and I visited the Caistor area of Lincolnshire on 11 August 2006 and I took the following photographs of some of the sites mentioned on this page:
Picture 1: St Mary's, Claxby - Ann Wilkinson was baptised in 1803 in Claxby - according to 1851 Census she was born Claxby in c1793.
Picture 2: Riverhead at Moortown, where William and Mary Hornsey were living when Christiana was baptised.
Picture 3: St Mary's Church, South Kelsey.
Picture 4: The grave of George Skipworth Esq; Mark was a gamekeeper on the estate of George Skipworth.
Picture 5: Moortown House - now known as Moortown House Farm at South Kelsey. I could not get a decent view of Moortown House, the front being quite some distance from the road.
Picture 6: All Hallows Church, North Kelsey.
Picture 7: St John the Baptist, Nettleton.
It was pouring with rain most
of the time on 11 August when these pictures were taken and some are dark as a
result.![]()

Mary Buxton, widow, age 85 was John Buxton's mother - his father Thomas Buxton died 1828, buried 2 July 1828 at Bunny age 77.
Mary and Thomas Buxton were Barry's 4 x Great Grandparents. There is a marriage on IGI dated 29 July 1779 for Thomas Buxton and Mary Rew although the Bunny website has Mary's surname as KEW.
http://www.bunnyvillage.org.uk/ is a website for the small village in South Nottinghamshire. and I am grateful to them for the following information from the Parish Records and there's a record of Mary's birth. The following were baptised in St. Mary's Church, Bunny:
| Baptised | Name | Parents | Occupation | Child Number |
| 24/10/1817 | BUXTON Thomas | John and Fanny | Tailor | 1 |
| 01/06/1819 | BUXTON Henry | John and Fanny | Tailor | 2 |

There was no record of a marriage for John and Fanny/Frances in the Bunny records but I found a marriage on the IGI between a John Buxton and a Frances Taft taking place on 2 September 1817 at St Mary's, Nottingham. John and Frances Buxton were Barry's 3 x Great Grandparents
John and Frances Buxton
My husband Barry's 3 x Great Grandparents
I had found no sign of Mary's mother, Frances, in the 1841, but looking at the Bunny website there is a record of her burial in 1832:
| Name | Relations | Date | Age |
| Frances Buxton | Wife of John | 08/01/1832 | 40 |
The death of Frances was followed by the death of their infant son, William, buried on 3rd February 1833.
I have contacted the Bunny Village History Society and exchanged emails with Roger Sewell.
Roger is also interested in the "Buxton" surname and he informs me that he has been trying to find descendants of the Buxton family for many years and that there used to be lots of Buxton's in Bunny and nearby Bradmore.
"In 1910 Thomas and Mary Buxton with their son John Davis Buxton (age 10) left the cottage where the family had lived for at least 70 years as the village tailors. This was when the new owner of the estate put pressure on his tenants. They moved to Long Eaton, where Mary came from. In 1918 John was killed in the war. We have been trying to find a photograph of him for our memorial records or any further information. It seems all of the Buxton family had left the area."
Here are some photographs taken on a visit to Bunny during the summer (2007):
Photo 1: Using the "Bunny Images of the Past" book, we tried to work out, the location of the Buxton's cottage. Unfortunately, there was no one around to ask and we thought this might be where the cottage had been or if this was the actual cottage.

1851 Census
William and Mary Hornsey (nee Buxton), after their marriage in 1847 were in Nettleton and William's occupation is here shown as Game Keeper:
|
William Hornsey, Head, Mar, age 26, Game Keeper, born South Kelsey, Lincolnshire |
Mary Hornsey, Wife, Marr, age 24, born Bunny, Nottinghamshire |
Christiana Hornsey*, Dau, age 3, born South Kelsey, Lincolnshire |
* Barry's Great Grandmother baptised on 25 December 1847 at St Nicholas, South Kelsey.
On the same page as William and Mary at Nettleton was William's brother, Robert:
|
Robert Willey, Head, Widower, age 68, Labourer Ag, born Keelby, Lincolnshire |
John Day, Batchelor, Unm, age 66, Labourer Ag, born Keelby, Lincolnshire |
Robert Hornsey, Visitor, age 21, Labourer Ag, born South Kelsey, Lincolnshire |
Living in North Kelsey were Robert and Mary Wilkinson, Ann's parents:
|
Robert Wilkinson , Head, Mar, age 71, Farmers Shepherd, born Lincolnshire, Walesby |
Mary Wilkinson, Wife, Marr, age 72, born Lincolnshire, Scawby |
Also at North Kelsey were Mark's parents, Joseph and Sarah Hornsey:
|
Joseph Hornsey, Head, Mar, age 80, Farm Laborer, born Lincolnshire, Ludford |
Sarah Hornsey, Wife, Marr, age 74, Farm Laborer, born Lincolnshire, N Kelsey |
Joseph Hornsey, Son, Unm, age 42, Farm Laborer, born Lincolnshire, N Kelsey |
Mark and Ann were in South Kelsey:
|
Mark Hornsey, Head, Marr, age 49, Gamekeeper to G. Skipworth Esq, born North Kelsey, Lincs |
Ann Hornsey, Wife, Mar, age 48, born Claxby, Lincs. |
Sopiah (sic) Hornsey, Daur, age 10, Scholar, born S. Kelsey, Lincs |
Eliza Hornsey, daur, age 5, Scholar, born S. Kelsey, Lincs. |
Looking through the 1851 Census for the household of G. Skipworth Esq, I eventually found him living with his children and servants at Moorton House so presumably this was the estate where Mark worked.
Mary Hornsey nee Buxton's widowed father was still living in Bunny Village, Nottinghamshire in 1851:
| John Buxton, Head, Widr, age 67, Tailor & Farmer 13 acres, no regular men employed, born Notts, Bunny | Thomas Buxton, Son, Unm, age 33, Tailor, born Notts, Bunny | Ann Buxton, Daur, Unmarried, age 28, House Keeper, born Notts, Bunny | Catherine Buxton, Gr.Daur, age 4, Scholar, born Notts, Bunny | Thos Atkinson?, Nephew, Unmarried, age 17, Tailor's apprentice, born Northm, ?? | William Manners, Apprentice, Unmarried, age 13, Tailor's apprentice, born Derbysh, Cotmanhay |

Searching the 1861 Census, I think the following entry is Christiana Hornsey' living in Costock, Nottinghamshire in 1861 working as a General Servant in the home of Nathaniel and Mary Jackson - she was named as 'Catherine' and her age given as 13, birthplace "More Town", Lincolnshire.
| Nathaniel Jackson, Head, age 62, Wheel Wright, born Hoton, Leics. | Mary Jackson, wife, age 58, born Swirthland, Leics. | Elizabeth Garton, Daug, Marr, age 33, Ag Labs wife, born Rempstone, Notts | William Garton, Son-in-law, Marr, age 30, Ag Lab, born Normanton on Soar, Leics | Jackson Garton, Grandson, age 7mths, born Costock, Notts | Catherine Hornsey, Servant, Unmarried, age 13, born Moor Town, Lincs. |
I have received an email regarding the above entry from David Meredith. David found this page whilst 'trawling' for mentions of 'Gartons'. He went on to inform me that the Garton couple living in the household had another son born at Costock in 1863 by the name of Frederick Gibson Garton. The family later settled in the New Basford area of Nottingham where during the 1890's, Frederick Gibson Garton first produced his 'Garton HP Sauce' which he later sold to a firm in Aston, Birmingham and which is still on the go today under the brand name of "HP".
Christiana Wilkinson Hornsey married Thomas Dutton in Ilkeston in 1865 - more information can be found on the Barrowcliffe/Dutton family page.
Mark and Ann's daughter Mary Ann, now married to George Kennington was living at No.2 Rutland Terrace, Sutton, Yorkshire in 1861:
| George Kennington, Head, Marr, age 35, Coachman, born Lincs, Brigg. | Mary Ann, Wife, Marr, age 35, born Lincs, South Kelsey | Emma, Daug, Unm, age 9, Scholar, born Lincs, Louth | Eliza S., Daug, age 7, Scholar, born Lincs, Louth | Ann E., Daug, age 6, Scholar, born Lincs, Louth | Harriet, Daug, age 1, born Lincs, Louth |
In 1861, Christiana's mother, Mary Hornsey, wife of William was back in Bunny, Notts with her widowed father, John Buxton and unmarried brother, Thomas:
| John Buxton, Head, widower, age 77, Tailor & Cottager, born Nottinghamshire, Bunny | Thomas Buxton, son, unmarried, age 43, Tailor, born Nottinghamshire, Bunny | Mary Hornsey, Daughter, marr, age 34, born Nottinghamshire, Bunny |
There were several marks made by the enumerator obliterating parts of the "Condition" column, but it does look as if Mary was marked as "Married" rather than a widow. But where was William? I have found an entry on the BMD listings, a death for a William Hornsey.
Mystery still unsolved! I sent for the certificate, but unfortunately this William Hornsey was 88 years of age, a schoolmaster who died in 1853 in North Owersby. I am wondering now if William and Ann emigrated as I cannot trace a death (as yet) for either William nor Ann, nor can I find Ann in the 1871 census. I thought she might have remarried, but can't find a marriage for her either.
Piece No RG9/2393 Parish of South Kelsey - Schedule 65, Moortown has an interesting entry on the first line: "65 - Moortown - Ann Hornsey - Head - Widow" with no other items filled in on this line; and these words were crossed through - strangely, this was Christiana's Grandmother and Mother of the following three siblings, Ann died 11 Dec 1861 - the date the 1861 Census was taken on 7 April 1861, so the whereabouts of Ann on Census night is to date a bit of a mystery! The household comprised:
| Robert Hornsey, Head, widow, age 30, Gamekeeper, born South Kelsey, Lincolnshire | Sophia Hornsey, sister, unmarried, age 20, Servant, born South Kelsey, Lincolnshire | Eliza Hornsey, sister, unmarried, age 15, Scholar, born South Kelsey, Lincolnshire |
these three were all children of Mark and Ann Hornsey nee Wilkinson - Robert's full name was Robert Wilkinson Hornsey.
There is an Ann Hornsey at 4 Spittal Lane, in Sheffield which I think might be Mark Hornsey's widow visiting with her grandson, (Robert's son) Mark age 6:
| Thomas Redpath, Head, Marr, age 36, Tailor, born Yorks, Hull. | Elizabeth Redpath, Wife, Marr, age 33, born Lincolnshire, South Kilby | Ann Elizabeth Redpath, Daug, Unm, age 13, Tailor's daur, born Yorks, Hull | Selina Redpath, Daug, age 1month, born Yorks, Sheffield | Mark Hornsey, Visitor, age 6, Scholar, born Lincolnshire, Nettleton | Ann Hornsey, Visitor, Widow, age 58, born Lincolnshire, Exleby. |
Ann's birthplace was transcribed by the enumerator as Exleby, but there doesn't appear to be a place called Exleby in Lincolnshire - Our 'Ann' was born Claxby - this might have been mistranscribed by a Yorkshireman hearing a Lincolnshire accent. There is a Mark Hornsey age 16, born Nettleton, shown below in the 1871 Census, son of Robert Hornsey and his 2nd Wife Mary Ann by then living in Sheffield. Elizabeth Redpath was the daughter of Mark and Ann Hornsey born South Kelsey not as the enumerator wrote "South Kilby" - and this is the family in the 1851 Census showing Thomas and Elizabeth "Ridpath" living in Kingston upon Hull at 27 Wincolmlee, the household also included Elizabeth's sister, Emma:
| Thomas Ridpath, Head, Marr, age 26, Linen Draper, born Yorks, Hull. | Elizabeth Ridpath, Head, Marr, age 23, born Lincolnshire, South Kelsey | Ann E Ridpath, Daug, age 3, Scholar, born Yorks, Hull | Eliza Ridpath, Daug, age 1month, born Yorks, Hull | Emma Hornsey, Sister in law, Unm, age 19, Game Keepers Daur, born Lincoln, So Kelsey |
There's a marriage on FreeBMD Registered at Sculcoates in Sept 1846 for a Thomas Ridpath and Elizabeth Hornsey Vol 22 page 421.
I couldn't find Joseph and Sarah Hornsey in 1871, but there are deaths on FreeBMD for a Joseph Hornsey March quarter of 1860 vol 7a page 420 (page number not very clear), registered in Caistor; and for a Sarah Hornsey in March quarter of 1858, registered at Caistor, vol 7a page 464. Their unmarried son Joseph was living alone in North Kelsey:
|
Joseph Hornsey, Head, Unm, age 53, Ag Lab, born Lincolnshire, North Kelsey |
I found Robert Hornsey, William's brother, in Sheffield in the 1871 Census living at 66 Tenter Street, -
| Robert Hornsey, Head, Mar., age 41, Police Officer, born Lincolnsh, South Kelsey | Mary Ann, Wife, Mar., age 36 born Lincolnsh, Ludford | Mark, son, Unm., age 16, Carver & Gilder, born Lincolnsh, Nettleton | Sarah Ann, Daur, age 3, born Yorkshire, Sheffield |
| Also living in the house were eight lodgers, all Police Constables. | |||
Searching for the marriage of Robert and Mary Ann, the search results offered me Mary Ann Smith and Robert Hornsey AND also - Sophia Hornsey and George Whelpton - both couples being on the same page, registered in Sheffield; vol 9c and page 373 for April-June quarter of 1861.
Sophia Whelpton nee Hornsey were living in Nottinghamshire in 1871 in St John Street, East Retford:

I recently received an email from Helen Bell whose 3 x Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Hornsey:
Hi, saw your family tree on the internet and I noticed that you had some of my family members on it. My 3rd great-grandmother was Elizabeth Hornsey who married Thomas Redpath (ridpath). We just received Selina Redpaths birth certificate which gave us the Hornsey name. We do have some census and certificates if you are interested. Anyway hope to hear from you soon. Helen
Helen kindly sent me the photograph (above right) of Selina Brookes nee Redpath, her 2 x Great Grandmother and the following 1871 Census shows the Redpath family in Long Street, Easingwold with Selina, age 10:
| Thomas Redpath, Head, Mar., age 46, Tailor (journyman), born Yorkshire, Hull | Elizabeth Ridpath, Head, Marr, age 43, born Lincolnshire, Kelsey | Selina Redpath, Daug, age 10, born Yorkshire, Sheffield | Kate Redpath, Daur, age 5, born Yorkshire, Sheffield |

I have also received the following email requesting information:
Hello Hilary,
I am interested also in the HORNSEY family. I have a Jane HORNSEY married to a
William Henry PHIBBS in 1792 at Bushey Yorkshire. I have seen on the LDS site
where there is a Jane HORNSEY christened 20 Dec 1776 at Lincolnshire, parents
were Joseph and Rebeckah HORNSEY.
This birth date/christening
date is correct for my Jane HORNSEY. I have been told that her parents died
young and then she was in the care of Sir Richard Vanden Bempde Johnstone and
his wife. They lived at Hackness Hall, Yorkshire. On the back of a photo
of Jane it states that she was the Granddaughter of Sir Marmaduke LANGDALE.
So, are you able to help me at all? I was wondering if you had heard any of
these names at all linked to your family.
Maybe you have this Jane in your family and she is in fact not mine at all.
Thank you for your lovely family tree site, I read it with
much interest.
regards Kathryn
I repeat Kathryn's email here
hoping that someone can provide her with further information regarding her
HORNSEY and PHIBBS connection. Please contact me as below if you can help
Kathryn.
