My thanks to Marcus Thornton for supplying a copy of Thomas Gash's birth certificate; Marcus's 2 x Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Smith nee Gash

Thomas was three at the time of the 1841 and 12 in the 1851 Census. He was living in Kirton-in-Holland, Lincolnshire with his parents

I have been unable to locate Thomas so far in the 1861 census - he would have been aged 22.

I found him in the 1871 Census, living in Dalton Street, Darlington - this dwelling included two step-children and five lodgers:

Thomas Gash, Head, Mar, aged 37, an Labourer - Brickyard, born Lincolnshire, Kirton

Elizabeth M.J. Gash, wife, Mar, aged 30, born Durham, Darlington

Charlotte A. Gash, Daur, aged 2  born Durham, Darlington David W. Gash, son, aged 6m, born Durham, Darlington Richard Brownless, Step Son, aged 9, Labourer Brickyard, born Durham, Darlington

Elizabeth M.J. , Step Daur, aged 7, Scholar, born Durham, Darlington

James William Lee, Lodger, Mar, age 38, Boiler Maker, born Cheshire, Congleton Emma Lee, Lodger, Marr, age 36, born Hertfordshire, Albury Emma Lee, Lodger, age 1, born Middlesex, London William Morris, Lodger, Unm, age 24, Labourer Ironworks, born Ireland Patrick O'Malley, Lodger, Unm, age 21, Labourer, Ironworks, born Ireland.

I found a possible marriage for Elizabeth M J Brownless and Thomas Gash registered Darlington in September 1866 vol 10a, page 22; I tried to find Elizabeth's previous marriage and I found that there was an Elizabeth Mary Jane Taylor married Darlington, March quarter of 1861, and a Thomas Brownless married in the same quarter; however their volume numbers were the same 10a but the page number for Thomas was 15 and for Elizabeth page 19.  IGI does have this marriage but it is a record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church.  If this is the correct person, Elizabeth's birth was registered in Darlington in March quarter of 1839, vol 24, page 49.

In the 1881 Census, I found that Thomas Gash had moved from County Durham to Manchester and was living at number 63 Ash Street in the New Cross district:

Thomas Gash Head, Mar, aged 46; Labourer for Contractor, born Lincoln, Boston

Jane Gash, wife, Mar, aged 40, born Durham

Richard Gash, Son, Un, aged 18,  Labourer for Contractor, born Durham

Charlotte Ann Gash, Daur, age 13, Scholar, born Durham

David Wm. Gash, Son, aged 12,  Scholar, born Durham

George Henry Gash, Son, aged 7,  Scholar, born Durham

James Edward Gash, Son, aged 2,  born Durham

Thomas's wife is shown here as "Jane", choosing to be known as her 3rd christian name (Elizabeth Mary Jane). Richard Gash is her son from a former marriage, shown in 1871 as Richard Brownless.  He later reverts back to his former name on leaving home and marrying Margaret Tipper registered in Manchester in March 1890. The couple are shown residing at 6 Mannions Buildings, Manchester in the 1891 Census - his occupation is given as Bricklayers labourer.

By 1891, Thomas Gash had moved again, now at Barnsley, in South Yorkshire - 19 Ct. 9 New Street - they had a Boarder and another family living at the same address:

Thomas Gash Head, Mar, aged 50; Colliery Labourer, born Lincoln, Boston

Elizabeth Gash, wife, Mar, aged 47, born Durham, Darlington

David W. Gash, Son, Single, aged 21,  Bell Hanger, born Durham, Darlington

James E. Gash, Son, aged 12,  born Lancashire, Manchester Elizabeth Aspinall*, Boarder, age 1, born Lancashire, Manchester
William Milner, Head, Marr, age 44, Coal Miner, born Yorkshire, Leeds Hannah Milner, Wife, Marr, age 51, Hawker, born Yorkshire, Birstall Thomas Milner, Son, Single, age 16, Colliery Labourer, born Yorkshire, Leeds Albert Milner, Son, age 11,  born Yorkshire, Leeds

Thomas and Elizabeth's son George and daughter Charlotte had stayed in Manchester. Charlotte Anne had married James Aspinall, registered in the June quarter of 1886 at Salford; they were living at 1 Cox's Court, Salford and George Gash was in the same household:

James Aspinal, Head, Mar, aged 26; Employed; Market Porter "G.L.", born Lancashire, Manchester

Charlotte A., wife, Mar, aged 22, Employed; Cigar Maker "Job", born Durham, Darlington

Elizabeth A., Daur., aged 1,  born Lancashire, Manchester

Mary J., Daur., aged 2 Mo.,  born Lancashire, Manchester George Gash, Boarder, aged 16,  Poultry Dresser "fish", born Durham

Part of the occupations on this page were added in someone else's handwriting - I have added them here in inverted commas.

* Elizabeth Aspinall is recorded twice! boarding with her grandparents and also recorded with her parents in Manchester.

Thomas's wife was shown living at number 41 Thomas Street, Barnsley - now a widow in the 1901 Census -

Elizabeth Gash Head, Widow, aged 54, born Co. Durham, Darlington James E. Gash, son, single, aged 22, Coal Leader - own a/c, born Manchester

Elizabeth Ann, daur, aged 12, born Manchester

FreeBMD has a death registered at Barnsley - Thomas Gash, age 59, vol 9c page 102, March quarter of 1899.
