This second gallery will eventually be a mixture of ancient and modern.   There are currently 39 pictures here, keep scrolling down to find them. (more yet to add!)

Most of the pictures in this gallery relate to the Hickling and Braithwaite families.  My thanks go to the suppliers of some of the pictures: my nephew, David Braithwaite, my maternal cousins - Keith and Sonya Hickling; Lynn and Derek Hickling; Eileen and Ron Gooseman; and my paternal cousins Derek and Dorothy Gibbons; and Christine Ellis (nee Kirk) who used to live across the road at Kilnhurst Road, Rawmarsh.

The names of some of the people in the pictures on all these galleries are unknown to me; if anyone recognises someone please get in touch with me at the email address at the bottom of the picture.  If you recognise yourself and object to your picture being on this site, I do apologise and will remove the picture if you contact me.

Please click on each thumbnail to see an enlarged version of each picture, a description of which appears below.  Use the "Back" button to return to this page. Keep scrolling down for more pictures

Mary and Willie Hickling and children Is this Mary Hickling nee Gash? Mary Hickling known as 'Polly' William Hickling William Francis HICKLING Norman HICKLING Norman Hickling in Civvies Uncle Norman Hickling on the left with friends Mum and Uncle Norman Leslie Hickling Leslie Hickling at the wheel of a Rotherham Double Decker Leslie Hickling, Rotherham Corporation Bus Company Inspector

1 Mary and Willie Hickling with their children Back row, left to right, William, Norman, Charles; Irene, my mother on the stool, Leslie on Mary's knee.
2 Could be my Grandmother I think this is probably Mary Hickling nee Gash, my mother's mother.
3 Mary Hickling nee Gash Known as 'Polly', this is a rather austere picture of my Grandma - it was terrible creased and I have tried to restore it.
4&5 William Francis Hickling Uncle Bill in the army in World War One - my Mother's brother.
6 Norman Hickling Uncle Norman in uniform in World War One - another of my Mother's brothers
7 Uncle Norman in civvies.  He was gassed in the trenches during the WW1 conflict.
8 Hospital group? Is this outside a hospital?  I think the person in the centre, laid on a bed could be my Uncle Norman who suffered from the effects of mustard gas during World Ward One.
9 Norman Hickling on the left My Uncle Norman with 2 friends; the one on the right might be Edward Eccles.  I think they are sat in front of the converted tramcar where Norman lived.  As previously mentioned, he suffered from the effects of mustard gas from WWI and it was thought beneficial to 'live outdoors'.  This residence was in a field owned by Norman's parents not far from our houses on Kilnhurst Road.
10 Norman Hickling with his sister, Irene Uncle Norman with my Mother at the seaside; by this time Uncle Norman was walking with the aid of crutches.  Uncle Norman died in 1933. Mary Emma Simms wrote on the back "Your Mother & Uncle Norman. He died of the effect of gas, you may remember him, he lived in a tram in the field, he couldn't breath."
11 Leslie Hickling Fifth and youngest son of Mary and Willie Hickling.
12 Uncle Leslie at the wheel of a Rotherham Corporation Bus.
13 Leslie in his Inspector's uniform.

14 Unknown Braithwaites? My cousin Dorothy Gibbons (nee Haywood) supplied this superb photo of three brothers in front of a pony and trap.  Dorothy thinks that they are probably from the Braithwaite family.
15 Hannah Braithwaite nee Cupit My father's mother born 18 May 1861 at Portland Row, Selston.
16 Unknown group Is this Hannah or Annice Cupit? Or Hannah and one of her sisters?
17 Josiah Braithwaite My Grandfather, Josiah Braithwaite, 1859-1914
18 Josiah lived for a while before he died in this caravan because he had severe chest problems most likely caused from working all his life as a collier, underground. I think that must be Hannah stood at the door of the caravan and one of his grandsons is sat alongside Josiah.

20 James Arthur Braithwaite, eldest son of Josiah and Hannah Braithwaite James Arthur was an official with the National Union of Mineworkers and was Chairman of Wath upon Dearne UDC - he is shown here wearing his chain of office.
