Joseph POWDRELL and Ann WEAN
My 5 x Great Grandparents
Following an enquiry on the Rootsweb LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com email list I received replies from several listers. One lady, Alison Ring, from British Columbia in Canada sent me a whole list of Births, Marriages and Burials taken from the Markfield, Leicestershire fiches and Violet Matthew's record was sent to me by Lawrence and Jeanette Bond from Australia. I have tried unsuccessfully to contact Violet for permission to use this information.
I decided to create a separate Pewtrall family page after receiving more information from a few other descendants of Joseph Powdrell and Ann Wean.
It should be noted that there are various ways of spelling the family name and added to this are the variations that the Census transcriptions have introduced.
According to Violet, Joseph Powdrell was born in Leicestershire and christened on 14th May 1722 in Breedon on the Hill, LEI. Joseph was the son of Thomas Powdrell and Jane. The IGI also provides this baptism but only gives the name of Joseph's father, Thomas Powdrell (Batch No. C034402. Joseph died 28 June 1807 in Ibstock, LEI. Violet Matthews research also appears in the Ancestral File section of their Family Search website - http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp - Joseph's baptism in the Ancestral File, submitted by Violet on the Family Search website states that his parents were Thomas Powdrell and Elizabeth Hartlis, thus reinforcing the fact that the submissions on the Family Search website need to be checked.
Joseph married Ann Wean on 17 September 1746 in Ibstock (IGI states 1747). Ann was born 9 July 1716 in Ibstock, LEI, baptised 9 July 1716 also in Ibstock, Ann died 4 March 1788 in Ibstock. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Ween.
Children of Joseph and Ann Powdrell:
|
John Powdrell baptised 12 Aug 1749 in Ibstock LEI |
Joseph Powdrill* baptised 9 May 1751 in Ibstock, LEI; died 8 Mar 1792 in Markfield. Married Sarah Dalley. |
Anne Peutrill, baptised 26 Aug 1753 in Ibstock, LEI. (IGI has Ann Ponderhill) | Elizabeth Peutrill, baptised 5 Oct 1755 in Ibstock, LEI. |
Violet Matthews research continued with Generation 2 -
Joseph Powdrill* and Sarah Dalley
My 4 x Great Grandparents.
Joseph Powdrill married Sarah Dalley on 23 Nov 1774 in Markfield, LEI. Sarah was born about 1743 in Dolby, LEI and died 24 May 1832, age 89 in Markfield LEI.
In the early registers, the births, deaths and marriages were all on one page with minimal information as I found in these extracts from the Markfield registers:

|
Marriages Joseph Putrell & Sarah Dalley____________________________________Novr 23 |
Children of Joseph Powdrill and Sarah Dalley were as follows:
|
Joseph Pewtrall* born abt 1776 in Leicester, Lei; baptised 26 May 1776 in Ibstock, Leicester. Married Jane Deacon. (IGI has name as Joseph Ponterhill) |
John Putrill baptised 25 Apr 1779 in Ibstock, LEI. |
Stephen Putrill baptised 25 Apr 1779 in Ibstock, LEI. | Mary Putrill baptised 22 May 1785 in Ibstock, LEI. |
| Cynthia Putrill baptised 22 May 1785 in Ibstock, LEI. |
Samuel Putrill baptised 1 July 1787 in Markfield, LEI. |
William Powdrill baptised 1801 in Markfield, LEI. |
* My 3 x Great Grandfather
Appearing on the same 1774 Markfield Parish page was the burial of Mary Powdrell on 12 May 1774. This was probably a relative of Joseph's from an earlier generation. There was very little information given on these earlier registers to prove relationships, such as the age at death of Mary Powdrell. I also found the death of my 4 x Great Grandfather, Joseph Putrell; Violet's information also gives the same date of death but this brings into question the baptism of William Powdrill in 1801, unless Joseph's death delayed the baptism date -

Burials Joseph Putrell (Poor) ............................................................................March ......8 |
Apparently, according to one Leicester Researcher, the people used to plead poverty to get out of paying the fee - 'poor' people were excused from paying. Everyone suddenly became 'poor' and the fee was eventually discontinued as being impossible to collect.
Joseph Pewtrall and Jane Deacon
My 3 x Great Grandparents.
From Violet Matthew's research I learnt that Joseph Pewtrall married Jane Deacon on 25 Nov 1798 in Bagworth, LEI.
Generation 3 of Violet's research shows the marriage of Joseph Pewtrall born about 1776 in Leicester, baptised 26 May 1776 in Ibstock, LEI. Jane Deacon was born abt 1779 in Markfield LEI.
Children of Joseph Pewtrall and Jane Deacon were as follows:

Joseph and Jane's
daughter, Mary Ann Pewtrall*
married George Hickling on 21 Dec 1827 - my 2 x Great Grandparents.
Please see the Hickling family research for their
marriage and further information. Prior to this marriage though, I found
the following entry in the Markfield baptisms:

Jane, Wife, Marr, age 72, born Markfield abt 1779 |
1861 CENSUS
Looking for the different versions of PEWTRALL in the 1861 Census, I found a Jane PEWTRALL born about 1779 - this is my 3 x Great Grandmother living in Main Street at Markfield with her twice married daughter Elizabeth and family - "Kimber" was wrongly transcribed on Ancestry as Kriaber, however their daughter Martha was shown as 'Kimber'!
| Joseph Kimber, Head, Marr, age 36, Labourer, born Leics, Markfield | Elizabeth Kimber, Wife, Marr, age 35, Charwoman, born Leics, Markfield | William Hewitt, Son, age 10, Scholar, born Leics, Woodhouse | Charles Hewitt, Son, age 9, Scholar, born Leics, Woodhouse |

Elizabeth Kimber was my 2 x Great Grandmother Mary's sister and Joseph and Jane's youngest child, born 12 Dec 1825.
Elizabeth Hannah Pewtrill baptised 12 Dec 1825, married George Hewitt on 26 Nov 1849, my Great Grandfather Francis Thos Hickling (George Hickling and Mary Pewtrall's son) was recorded as a witness to their marriage, the bride's father being shown as Joseph Pewtrall. Their son was George Hewitt married Sarah Jane Lander. After George Hewitt Senior's death, Elizabeth Hannah Hewitt married Joseph Kimber.
Here's the Hewitt family entry in the 1851 Census living in Panes (or Pares) Cottages, Woodhouse, LEI:
| George Hewitt, Head, Marr, age 29, Agri. Lab., born Leics, Sheepshed | Elizabeth H. Hewitt, Wife, Marr, age 25, born Leics, Markfield | William Hewitt, Son, age 2 months, born Leics, Woodhouse |
I thought I had found my 3 x Great Grandfather, Joseph Pewtrell's death in 1853 and sent for the certificate, but when it arrived it was Joseph Pewtrell, age 16 years who died at Snibstone, Packington. This certificate was, I believe for Samuel and Frances Pewtrell's son. Details shown below.
I have now found an entry for the death of a Joseph Peutrell, which might be my 3 x Great Grandfather, registered Market Bosworth, Vol 7a page 46 Oct/Dec quarter of 1855:

I could not find Samuel and Fanny in the 1861 Census, then I keyed in just "Samuel" with his birth year and birthplace - they had been transcribed by Ancestry as 'Pawtnell' - the enumerator seemed to have difficulty too as it does look like Pawtnell!. They were living in Packington:
| Samuel Pewtrill, Head, Marr, 49, Coal Miner, born LEI, Markfield | Fanny Pewtrill, Wife, Marr, 50, born LEI, Kirkby Mallery | Charles Pewtrill, son, Un. 20, Coal Miner, born LEI, Hugglescote | Thomas Pewtrill, son, 20, Coal Miner, born LEI, Hugglescote | Samuel Pewtrill, son, 15, Coal Miner, born LEI, Hugglescote | Thomas Wardle, Nephew, Lodger, Un, 23, Coal Miner, born LEI, Thurlaston |
They were also hard to find in 1871! Using the same method, I found that they had moved up to South Yorkshire! Living in Wombwell, Barnsley at No. 124 Utly's Cot and transcribed as "Pentrell" . Looking at the Enumeration District they were living near their Hickling relatives in Jump/Hemmingfield:
| Samuel Peutrell, Head, Marr, 59, Green-grocer, born LEI, Markfield | Fanny Peutrell, Wife, Marr, 58, born LEI, Kirby Marlay | Charles Peutrell, son, Unm. 32, Collier, born LEI, Hugglescote | Samuel Peutrell, son, Unm, 25, Collier, born LEI, Hugglescote | Eliza Peace, Grand Dau., 11, Scholar, born LEI, Hugglescote |
In 1881, Frances Peutrell, was shown as "Widow", still in Yorkshire - at 119 Allotts Cott, Jump, near Wombwell - transcribed as "Pentrell" by Ancestry:
| Frances Peutrell, Mother, Widow, 68, born LEI, Kirby Melledge | Charles Peutrell, son, Unm. 42, Coal Miner, born LEI, Hugglescote | Samuel Pewtrill, son, Unm, 35, Coal Miner, born LEI, Hugglescote | Thomas Mitchell, Boarder, 32, Coal Miner, born Glamorganshire, South Wales | John Foy, Boarder, Unm. 26, Coal Miner, born Yorkshire, Rotherham |

I have been contacted by a researcher, Wayne Brown. Wayne is helping
Ralph Lock to research his family history. Ralph's connection is Joel
and Phoebe Pewtrall's son Ernest.
Ralph's Mother was Florence Vera Peutrill, born 19 July 1916; died 22 July 1995. Florence married George Edward Henry Lock on 2 August 1936. Florence's parents were Ernest Peutrill born 1878 and Julia Reading born c1885 - Ernest and Julia were married in 1906. Ralph has sent me the pictures shown on the left.
