Robert Braithwaite = Harriet Micklethwaite

My Great Grandparents

Information regarding Robert and Harriet's marriage and the period following their marriage can be seen by following the Braithwaite family link above.

Harriet's parents were -

Benjamin Micklethwaite = Sarah Charlesworth

My Great Great Grandparents

The information I currently hold on the Micklethwaite connection has been very kindly sent to me by Connie Goldring - Connie's ancestor is Joel; and another researcher is Andrew Shaw who is descended from Hannah Micklethwaite.  My first introduction to the Micklethwaite's, following receipt of Robert and Harriets' wedding certificate, was via the records on the http://www.bolsterstone.de website.  I have now visited Sheffield Local Studies Library to access their Census records, Sheffield Archives, Bradfield Archives and  Barnsley Archives.  Some of this information is also to be found on the www.familysearch.org IGI Individual Records.  I am currently looking through the records held at the Mormon Church Local History Centre at Wheel Lane, Grenoside.

Andrew has compiled a Family History Record and this can be seen by following this link Andrew has believes that the parents of Sarah Charlesworth were Benjamin Charlesworth and Elizabeth Silverwood.

Benjamin and Sarah's children were -

Betty, born 2 Sept 1820 baptised 29 October George, born 4 Feb 1822, baptised 10 Mar 1822 Sarah Ann, born 5 Feb 1824 at Onesacre; baptised 19 Apr 1824 Harriet* born 19 May 1826 at Coldwell, Oughtibridge; baptised 6 Aug 1826
Matilda, born Stocksbridge 17 Jan 1829, baptised 26 Apr 1829 Eliza, born 27 June,  baptised 17 Oct 1831 at Bolsterstone Joel, born 9 May 1834 at Onesacre, baptised 4 Nov 1834

Hannah, born 1836 at Onesacre; baptised 2 Jan 1837

Aaron born 3 March 1839; baptised at Penistone 26 Apr 1839

* my great grandmother

Most were baptised at the Netherfield Congregational Church at Thurlstone - Benjamin was also christened there suggesting that Benjamin's parents were non-conformists and Benjamin carried on this belief.

Benjamin Micklethwaite was born at Whitwell, near Stocksbridge on 2 October 1791 and baptized 20 December 1791; his parents were John and Elizabeth Micklethwaite - it is unclear as yet who Elizabeth was, various sources suggest that it was Elizabeth Yates who was born about 1763.

John Micklethwaite = Elizabeth Yates?

Benjamin Charlesworth = Elizabeth Silverwood

My Great Great Great Grandparents (possibly/probably?)

John and Elizabeth Micklethwaite's children were -

Benjamin, born 2 Oct 1791 at Whitwell; baptised 20 Dec 1791 Mary, born 7 Dec 1792; baptised 2 Jan 1793 Joseph, born 1 Feb 1795; baptised 22 Apr 1795 Ann, born 29 Apr 1797;   baptised 18 May 1797
Jonathan, born 8 May 1800; baptised 25 May 1800 Elizabeth Micklethwaite, born Jan 1803; baptised 10 Jan 1803 Hannah, born 3 Sep 1810; baptised 12 Oct 1810

All were baptised at the Netherfield Congregational Church at Thurlstone

Looking through the Bradfield fiches, revealed the following entry:

I found this record of Benjamin Micklethwaite's birth taken from Netherfield Chapel, near Thurlstone, No. 1 Register:

And in the Burial records for St Mary's Bolsterstone I found the following entry:

Are Betty Yates and Elizabeth Micklethwaite the same person?  I'm still searching through the records to try and find more evidence.

Barnsley Archives have the Overseers of the Poor Account Books for Hunshelf and I have spent some time transcribing all mentions of the Micklethwaite name appearing in the Accounts.  I repeat below one section where payments were made to John Micklethwaite in 1814 with regard to his wife, Elizabeth's illness and subsequent funeral expenses -

Bolsterstone Church and Churchyard Horace Micklethwaite, remembered The road to Bradfield Church Bradfield Church and Churchyard Bradfield Archives

1 Bolsterstone Church Some of the Micklethwaite family graves are in Bolsterstone churchyard.  This was the first location I visited when finding I had Micklethwaite ancestors.

5 Bradfield Archives Malcolm Nunn is the Parish Archivist - he has produced 2 books with photographs "Around Bradfield, Loxley and Hillsborough"; on his right are my friend, Jane and I, being guided by Malcolm on our visit in June 2004.

Benjamin and Sarah led an eventful life.  Benjamin Micklethwaite has been the subject of several articles and stories.  Phyllis Crossland, the author of several books based in the region has included Benjamin in her interesting book "Echoing Hills".  In the book local children are taught in a room in  "Gin House" this property was later renamed "Well House".  This was actually in Hunshelf and this room was used until the Greenmoor school was built.  Follow this link to read more of Benjamin's story

On 3rd April, 2006, at Barnsley Archives, I found some documents relating to Benjamin and Sarah's eldest daughter, Betty.  Apparently Betty was pregnant and the Overseers were concerned that they would have to provide the finance for Betty's unborn child.  It must have been an absolutely harrowing ordeal for Betty in 1840, being an unmarried mother, 'on the parish' having to appear before the Overseers in order to tell them who was the father.  Apparently in some cases, women who helped during the birth of an illegitimate child, were told to ask the pregnant mother to disclose the father's name at a crucial time during the birth of the child - they were told to threaten to withdraw help if the name was withheld.

The first document sent by the Overseers of Hunshelf was to John Dransfield, a Solicitor acting on behalf of Hunshelf Parish -

There is another document a Bastardy Filiations Order - a somewhat upsetting document which names the father of Betty's child as John Haigh of Hunshelf, a Stone Mason.

The Filiations Order - The Overseers of the Poor of Hunshelf, in order to ensure that John Haigh contributed to the upkeep of Betty Micklethwaite's child, Amos, sought through the Quarter Sessions a Filiations Order ordering John to pay for the upkeep of the child.

1841 Census

Benjamin and Sarah Micklethwaite appear, with their family, in the 1841 Census living in Hunshelf, Yorkshire at Green Moor -

Benjamin Micklethwaite  age 49, a School Master

Sarah Micklethwaite age 45 Mathilda Micklethwaite  age 12 Eliza Micklethwaite  age 9 Joel Micklethwaite age 6 Hannah Micklethwaite age 4 Aaron Micklethwaite age 2 Amos Micklethwaite age 1
All were transcribed as being born in Yorkshire

Amos is shown above living with his Grandparents in Hunshelf.  His mother as shown above was Betty Micklethwaite.  I have not been able to find my Great Grandmother, Harriet Micklethwaite in the 1841 Census.

Here's Betty, at Glasshouse:

William Austwick, age 73, Ag Lab, born Yorks

Hannah Austwick, age 65,  born Yorks William Austwick, age 40, Waller, born Yorks Betty Micklethwaite  age 20, Female Servant

There was a Harriot Micklewaite age 15 in Upper Denby living with Juday Micklethwaite - this Harriot's occupation is shown as "Fancy Weaver" - but this is not 'our' Harriot, I have found this Harriot Micklethwaite in the Penistone Parish Records as having married John Tyas, a Weaver, and residing in Upper Denby.  So the whereabouts of Harriot on the night of the 1841 Census is still a mystery to me.  However Andy Micklethwaite pointed this entry out which could be her working at Barugh, Darton district of Barnsley:

Elizabeth Crowther age 40, a Farmer

Harriott Crowther, age 11 Ellen Crowther, age 3 James Crowther, age 1 N K 5 days

Fanny Pickering age 12, a Female Servant

George Sidebottom, age 20, a Male Servant Robert Fenwick, age 15, a Male Servant Harriot Mickelthwaite, age 15, a Female Servant

Another entry at Onesacre was a household headed by Charles Crawshaw, a Farmer; also residing at this address was Sarah Micklethwaite - this could be Sarah Ann, Benjamin and Sarah's daughter; the household comprised -

Charles Crawshaw age 45, a Farmer

Sarah Crawshaw, age 40 Elizabeth Crawshaw, age 20 Hugh Crawshaw, age 2 Ann Crawshaw, age 20 Sarah Micklethwaite, age 15, Female Servant James Wadsworth age 20, Male Servant

Also at Onesacre serving his apprenticeship at Hill Top was George:

John Ellison, age 35, File Smith J, born Yorks Elizabeth Ellison, age 35, born Yorks Joseph Ellison, age 2, born Yorks

William Deakin, age 15, File Smith App, born Yorks

George Micklethwaite , age 15, File Smith App, born Yorks Catharine Ellison, age 10, Female Servant, born Yorks George Ellison, age 40, File Smith J, born Yorks

Benjamin Micklethwaite died on 17 July 1848 and the table below is extracted from his death certificate.  In the 1841 census it was stated that his age was 49, yet seven years later,  his death certificate quotes him as being 68 years of age!  Benjamin was born 2 October 1791 this would indicate that he was 57 or 58 when he died - his age is given as 58 in the Parish Records as can be seen below these official records:

Matilda later married Thomas Gill abt March 1852; their only child was George.  Sadly though Matilda was buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Bolsterstone on 16 March 1856 and George, christened 29 February 1856, was later buried in the same churchyard as Matilda on 28 April 1856. Eliza Micklethwaite also married a Gill, Joseph Gill - their marriage was abt June 1852.

My Great Grandmother Harriot Micklethwaite married Robert Braithwaite on 12 February 1849 in Penistone and their marriage record and census information can be seen on the Braithwaite family page.

Here's Betty Micklethwaite in 1851 now married to Thomas Marshall:

Thomas Marshall, Head, age 35, a Miner, born in Bradfield

Betty Marshall, wife, age 32, born in Penistone Amos Micklethwaite, Lodger, age 11, a Wire Drawer, born Penistone Martha Marshall, Daughter, age 9, Scholar, born Penistone Mary Marshall, Daughter, age 9, Scholar, born Penistone
Samuel Marshall, son, age 6, Scholar, born Penistone Ann Marshall, Daughter, age 4, born Penistone Sarah Marshall, Daughter, age 1, born Bradfield Annis Butterworth, Visitor, age 12, Scholar, born Bradfield

Amos, here described as a 'lodger' was the illegitimate son of Betty Micklethwaite  and John Haigh according to the Hunshelf Overseer's records - information shown above.   Betty was the eldest daughter of Benjamin and Sarah.  Betty and Thomas married in 1841 registered in the December quarter at Wortley v22 page 569.  Before his marriage Thomas is shown in the 1841 Census living on Hunshelf Bank with his Mother and Father, John and Ann Marshall.

Benjamin and Sarah's eldest son George was living with his wife and family at Onesacre, in the abode column it looks like Black Ashop, George's birthplace is very hard to read and has been transcribed on Ancestry as "Meston, Yorkshire" - in the household is his sister Hannah:

Geo. Micklethwaite, Head, Marr, age 29, Rasp Cutter*, born Yorks, Meston? Harriet Micklethwaite, Rasp Cutters Wife, Marr, age 24,  born Yorks, Thurlstone John Micklethwaite, son,  age 4, born Yorks, Bradfield Ann Micklethwaite, daur,  age 2, born Yorks, Bradfield
Benj. Micklethwaite, Rasp Cutters son,  age 5 m, born Yorks, Bradfield John Crookes, Lodger,  age 24, Unm, File Cutter, born Yorks, Bradfield Hannah Micklethwaite, sister,  age 14, Unm, born Yorks, Bradfield

* Someone has added "File" after the occupation of George.  George had married Harriet Beaumont in 1847.

I eventually found Sarah Ann living with husband Enoch Thompson Vickers; enumerated as Enoch Thomson (as on the death certificate of his Mother in law, Sarah Micklethwaite - they were in Hay Woods:

Enock Thompson, Head, Mar, age 22, Shoe Maker, born Lancashire, Great Bolton Sarah Ann Thompson, Wife,  Mar, age 27,  born Yorkshire W.R., Bradfield John Thompson, son,  age 1, born Yorkshire W.R., Bradfield

Enoch in 1841 was recorded at Windy Bank Hall, Hunshelf:

Thomas and Betty Marshall appear in the 1861 Census living at Horner House, Stocksbridge - this time, Amos is identified as their son:

Thomas Marshall, Head age 45, a Coal Miner, born in Stannington

Betty Marshall, wife, age 41, born in Stocksbridge Amos Micklethwaite, son, age 21, a Coal Miner, born Wortley Mary Marshall, Daughter, age 19, born Stocksbridge Samuel Marshall, son, age 16, born Stocksbridge

Eliza now married to Joseph Gill was living in Deepcar, staying/visiting was Eliza's sister, Hannah:

Joseph Gill, Head, age 31; Marr; Porter, born Penistone, Yorks Eliza Gill, Wife, Marr, age 30, born Bradfield, Yorks Ruth Gill, daughter, age 6, Scholar, born Bradfield, Yorks George Gill, son, age 4, Scholar, born Bradfield, Yorks Matilda A. Gill, daughter, age 2,  born Bradfield, Yorks Hannah Miclthwate, Sister in law, Un, age 23, Servant, born Bradfield, Yorks

Aaron Micklethwaite had married Elizabeth Downing and they were living at the Wharncliffe Arms in Wharncliffe Side:

John Downing, Head, age 57, General Labourer, born in Yorkshire, Wortley

Mary Ann Downing, Wife, age 54, born in Yorkshire, Oxspring Mary Ann Downing, daughter, unmarried, age 23, born in Yorkshire, Bradfield Elizabeth Micklethwaite, daughter, Married, age 21, born Yorkshire, Bradfield

Aaron Micklethwaite, Son in law, age 22, File Cutter, born Yorkshire, Penistone

Jane Ann Downing, daughter, unmarried, age 16, born in Yorkshire, Bradfield Sarah Jane Downing, daughter, unmarried, age 14, born in Yorkshire, Bradfield Matthew Downing, son,  age 12, Scholar, born in Yorkshire, Bradfield Nick ????, Lodger, unmarried age 20

John Downing was not named as Publican.  The Lodger on the last line looked like an afterthought or he might not have been present when the enumerator called and no one knew anything about him, hence no surname, no occupation or place of birth.

Benjamin and Sarah's son George was living at Onesacre and their address was shown as "Bothouse" - I thought that this should have been 'Pothouse' but the enumerator's over-elaborate 'B' was identical to the B in Bradfield, the Township, shown at the top left -

George Micklethwaite, Head, Marr, age 38, Rape File Cutter, born Yorkshire, Bradfield Harriet Micklethwaite, Wife, Marr, age 33,  born Yorkshire, Thurlstone John Micklethwaite, son,  age 13,  Rape File Cutter, born Yorkshire, Bradfield Ann Micklethwaite, daur,  age 12, born Yorkshire, Bradfield

1871 Census

Benjamin and Sarah's son, Aaron Micklethwaite appears in the 1871 Census living at Wharncliffe Side, at the Wharncliffe Arms -

Aaron Micklethwaite,

Head, age 32, File Cutter and Publican, born Penistone, Yorkshire

Elizabeth Micklethwaite, Wife, age 31, born Bradfield, Yorkshire

John Micklethwaite, son, age 8, Scholar, born Bradfield, Yorkshire

George Micklethwaite, son, age 5, born Bradfield, Yorkshire Eliza Lee, Servant, age 19, General Servant, born Ecclesfield, Yorkshire

Aaron Micklethwaite had married Elizabeth Downing on 19 November 1860 at St Phillip's in Sheffield.  I asked for information regarding the Wharncliffe Arms at Wharncliffe Side on the Sheffield Rootsweb list and Celeste from Stalybridge responded by forwarding me the following website, containing a picture of the pub:

http://www.britishpubguide.com/cgi-bin/pubsearch.cgi?results:Yorkshire_South:100694

Celeste wrote in her email -

"The Wharncliffe Arms does still exist. It's just down the road from Spring Grove Mills, a Paper Mill, which is now owned by Georgia Pacific. I used to work there so spent many happy lunch hours there celebrating birthdays etc. I also lived in Oughtibridge which is the next village along."

The back of the Wharncliffe Arms The front of the Wharncliffe Arms Wharncliffe Side in Stocksbridge Church with Hunshelf in the background Connie and Brenda Golding

The first two pictures were taken in March 2005 - as you can see the pub is still there.

The third picture was hanging on the wall in the pub and was taken looking down the road in I think 1896.  Barry and I had a drink there.  One of the customers attracted my attention - he thought that I was Helen Jackson MP and wanted to make a complaint about Woodhead!  This is getting to be a habit - third time I've been asked if I was Helen Jackson MP, the other two occasions were at Hillsborough, at Sheffield Wednesday matches.  One was a charity collector and the other was a waiter in the North Stand lounge!  Three things we have in common, old age, straight hair and glasses!

The remaining two pictures were sent to me by Connie Goldring who has provided me with a wealth of information regarding the Micklethwaite family - the scene shows Stocksbridge Parish Church with Hunshelf in the background and was taken on 30 June 1973.

The last picture shows Connie and Brenda Goldring, descendants of Joel Micklethwaite  seen here on holiday in Land's End, Cornwall.

Also in the Ecclesfield, Bradfield 1871 Census I found Amos Micklethwaite - at Horner House -

Amos Micklethwaite, Head, age 31, Banksman at Coal Pit, born Penistone, Yorks

Mary Micklethwaite, Wife, age 27, born Penistone, Yorks

Sarah Ann Micklethwaite, daughter, age 8, Scholar, born Bradfield, Yorks

George Micklethwaite, son, age 6, Scholar, born Penistone, Yorks Ben Micklethwaite, son, age 3, Scholar, born Bradfield, Yorks Samuel Micklethwaite, son, age 1, born Bradfield, Yorks

Amos Micklethwaite had married Mary Brearley on 20 May 1861 at Bradfield.

Amos Micklethwaite - PresidentJoel MicklethwaiteThis copy shows two pages from the book "Stocksbridge Band of Hope Industrial Co-operative Society Jubilee History 1860-1910" by Joseph Kenworthy, and pictured (top left) is Amos Micklethwaite who had been a former President from June 1876 to June 1880.  Thanks to Dennis Turner, a descendant of Joel Micklethwaite for sending me this image.  I hope its OK to use the image as I don't know how to contact Joseph Kenworthy's* descendants for their permission.  If anyone objects to anything on this site please contact me using the email address at the bottom of this page.

* In March I received an email from Nigel Clarke:

"I am Joseph Kenworthy's Great Grandson, (also a local historian), and its good to see that his work is still useful to others who pursue the craft. So you can say you have the families permission now!"  Nigel was at that time helping the present tenants of the Wharncliffe Arms to research the history of the building and its locality.

The second picture is of Joel Micklethwaite this  image is taken from a section in Harry Eastwood's book "History of Stocksbridge".  I have yet to discover how to contact a member of Harry's family for permission to use this image.  If anyone objects, meanwhile, please contact me.

One of the stories that Harry Eastwood relates in his section on Stocksbridge Wesleyan Methodist Church concerns Joel -

Conversion of Joel Micklethwaite

Joel was one of our first trustees, and was converted under strange circumstances.  It so happened that Joel was near to the preaching room on the day of the opening of the Sportsman's Arms, which stands close by, and boasted that he would have the first pint of beer drawn in the Sportsman; but by someone's influence he was persuaded to attend the prayer meeting, and became converted. - so the first pint was not consumed by Joel.

In the 1871 Census Joel and Sarah Micklethwaite were living at Wood Royd
