Part of the Jackson Family History Research

David Pittam - 2 x Great Grandson of Jane Hickling, on finding the Hickling family page, contacted me with information regarding Jane. Jane was the youngest daughter of my 2 x Great Grandparents, George and Mary Hickling.

David had just obtained her birth certificate and the information is shown here:

Jane has proved difficult to find in the 1861 Census - I did find her in 1871 - as a Domestic Servant in the home of Hosiery Manufacturer Joseph Marlow, 36 West Street, St Mary's Leicester:

Joseph W. Marlow,  Head, Married, aged 31, a Hosiery Manufacturer, born Leicester

Living with Jane's parents in 1871 was Jane's daughter Amy.

Jane Hickling had married Joseph Hardy and they are shown in the 1881 Census, living in Main Street, Hugglescote & Donnington, Leicestershire:

* Mistranscribed - this is Jane's daughter Amy - confirmation of this has been forwarded to me by a descendant of Amy's - David Pittam.

Joseph was present at the death of Mary Hickling nee Peutrel (his mother-in-law) in 1878 and was stated to be present at the death.

David Pittam emailed me writing: My family line is via Jane Hickling (1847). She did indeed have Amy (1867) as an illegitimate child before marrying Joseph Hardy (1846, Desford). I do not know who Amy’s father was – there is a blank on her birth certificate.
Like you I have not been able to find Jane in 1861.

Jane was living in Hugglescote Lane - all the family though are shown as being born in Coalville!

Joseph and Jane's daughter, Amy had married Thomas Owen Pittam on 5 December 1891 in the Parish Church, Hugglescote and David wrote - (My Great Grandparents – my father’s father’s parents). Thomas was from the Pittam family of Silverstone, Northamptonshire, a family of agricultural workers and lace makers. I assume Thomas had moved to work in the coal mines. He was in Silverstone in 1881 as an agricultural labourer but a coal miner living in Hugglescote by his 1891 marriage certificate (not found on 1891 census). David sent me details of their marriage certificate:

They had a son – Arthur Thomas Hickling Pittam (my grandfather, who I knew) – on 6 April 1895 in Botcheston, Ratby, Leicestershire. Thomas was still a miner.

Here's Thomas and Amy in the 1901 Census living at 33 Pepper Street, Hunslet, Leeds by this time Thomas was working on the railway:

There were 4 rooms in the house; "Particulars as to Marriage" and this was divided into 4 columns - Marital status; How long the marriage had lasted; Total children born alive; No. still living; No. who had died.  In this case the columns showed:

Married 20 4 4 none

David goes on to state:The family then “disappear”, next appearing in 1917 in Burton Upon Trent at Arthur’s marriage to Sarah Walker (born 1897, Burton upon Trent) on 18 March 1917. Thomas and Arthur worked on the railways in Burton, probably associated with the breweries there. At the wedding Sarah was a domestic servant and Arthur was in the army.

Amy Pittam (nee Hickling) died in Burton in 3 March 1917, i.e. just before Arthur’s wedding, of Chronic Nephritis and Heart Failure:
