I have been somewhat reluctant to start researching the Jacksons because its a frequently occurring surname and I have been concentrating on the family research on my side of the family.  However following a query from someone who found my website, I thought I'd make a start.

I have various certificates which Barry's father Robert Jackson (known as Bob) had saved and I started with them -

For Robert Jackson, though I had only found the small birth certificate and obtained the full certificate for more information.

Bob was born on 9 October 1902 in we believed Cudworth, Barnsley.  On this small certificate it gives Place of Birth Registration District as Barnsley; Sub-district as Darton. The full certificate reveals more -

Not knowing much about Burslem  I used Google to see what I could find.  I discovered the following useful website containing articles and photographs of Burslem and the surrounding district:

http://www.thepotteries.org/six_towns/burslem.htm and another useful website can be found at - http://www.thepotteries.org/family_history/index.htm

John Jackson was born on 23 August 1860 at 99 Hot Lane, Burslem, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire and his parents were -

John Jackson = Ann Bloor

Barry's Great Grandparents

The only document I had at first relating to John Jackson and Ann Bloor was the birth certificate of their son John Jackson:

I hereby certify that the above is a true Copy of an Entry of Birth in a Register Book in my custody

Witness by hand this 4th day of November 1927

Signed by Superintendent Registrar P E Rowland

This Birth Certificate was a copy applied for by John Jackson, himself - his address at this time was 20 Park Street sign for Hot LanePark Avenue, CarcroftBentley Moor Lane, CarcroftAvenue, Carcroft, Nr Doncaster on 3 November 1927. This is shown on the back of the copy birth certificate and appears as a printed header - NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE ACTS, 1911 TO 1920 AND UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE ACT 1920.  Then details of the person who applied for the copy of the birth certificate as detailed above.  John must have been 67 years of age when he applied for his birth certificate. On 8 May 2006, Barry and I journeyed to Carcroft and found Park Avenue - some of the houses are still standing but the even numbers start at 24 and there are some newer properties where No. 20 would have been. Picture No.1 shows the sign for Hot Lane in Burslem where John was born.   Picture No.2 is the start of the houses currently standing on Park Avenue, at Carcroft, the newer houses are shown on the right.  Picture No. 3 shows Bentley Moor Lane this is where the family lived in 1931 - there is no residential property left, only industrial units on both sides of this road.

The next certificate I sent for was the marriage certificate for John and Ann Bloor -

This may well be the marriage of Barry's 2 x Great Grandparents.   The witness Bagnall Beech was witness to many marriages throughout this period, he was probably one of the Church Wardens.

There is an IGI record for the baptism of Hamlet Bloor on 25 Jun 1809 in Burslem, Staffs where the parents were given as John and Sarah Bloore.  Another Jackson researcher, Andrew Mackintosh had found the actual baptism and the record stated John and Sarah Bloore of Dale Hall, which Andrew stateds was an area in Burslem.

---o0o---

I next found the birth of a daughter Ann, to Hamlet and Elizabeth JACKSON - Hamlet and Elizabeth Jackson could be Barry's 2 x Great Grandparents:

This document shows that Robert Price was born in abt 1839 and Eliza Lees in abt 1838.   The Residence at the time of marriage is hard to read but just might have been Dale Hale*.  Also the name of Eliza Lees's father has been transcribed as 'Samuel' when in various Census returns its shown as Simeon.  I have queried this with the GRO and they relooked at the original Marriage Certificate and confirmed that the name of Eliza's father was definitely given as 'Samuel' on the certificate. We believe the error is on the certificate as we can't trace a Samuel Lees who matches any of our information.  I am presently searching the microfilm for St John's Bishop Transcripts for Burslem, this might help me sort out whether its Simon or Simeon, although I need St Paul's records to check the above marriage.

* http://www.thepotteries.org/did_you/003.htm Finding this site on the Internet, led me to believe that the residence on the marriage certificate was indeed Dale Hall.

I sent for a birth certificate for the only Eliza LEES I could find on any of the birth lists that was a near match - that was found on Staffordshire BMD - the certificate arrived on 26 May 2005 and if this is 'our' Eliza, reveals her Mother and Father as Simeon and Ann Lees (formerly Poulson):

On the Burslem microfilm I found the marriage of Barry's 2 x Great Grandparents, Simeon Leese and Ann Poulson taking place at St John's, Burslem:

The person compiling the Bishop Transcripts for the estalished church at this period didn't mention occupations on marriage records but the nonconformists registers did give 3 generations of names on baptisms.  Searching these Non-conformist records for Staffordshire, I found several baptism entries for children of Simeon and Ann in the registers for the Wesleyan Chapel, Tunstall in the Parish of Wolstanton -

Page 96: No.703 Herbert the son of Simeon Leese, Tunstall in the Parish of Wolstanton in the County of Stafford, Printer, and of Ann his wife who was the daughter of John and (Blank) Poulson born (blanks) And was solemnly baptized with Water in the name of the father, of the son, and of the Holy Ghost, on the Twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord 1832 by me John Brandreth

Page 120: No.891 Jane the daughter of Simeon Leese, Tunstall in the Parish of Wolstanton in the County of Stafford, Potter, and of Ann his wife who was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Poulson born on the Third day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Thirtyseven; And was solemnly baptized with Water in the name of the father, of the son, and of the Holy Ghost, on the Fifth day of March in the year of our Lord 1837 by me Samuel Fiddian

A previous record from the Wesleyan Chapel at Tunstall showed -

No.39 Simeon the son of Aaron Lees of Tunstall in the Parish of Burslem in the County of Stafford (Potter) and of Jane his wife who was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Harvey was born on the Twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven.  And solemnly baptized with Water in the name of the father, of the son, and of the Holy Ghost, on Ninth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven, by me J. D. Burton.

The above register entry showed another two generations;

Aaron Lees and Jane Harvey 3 x Great Grandparents and

Samuel and Hannah Harvey 4 x Great Grandparents

All children of Aaron and Jane, shown on the above records were:

Harvey, born 15 May 1808 baptised 4 June; Married Maria Machin 26 Jun 1830 in Newcastle under Lyme Simeon (as above) Asaph, born 10 June 1813, baptised 17 June 1813; Married Elizabeth Foster, daughter of John & Sarah Foster Austin, born 3 July 1815, baptised 30 July 1815 Henry, born 5 May 1817, baptised 6 July 1817
Christopher Christian, born 4 Nov 1819, baptised 5 Dec 1819 Jabez Septamus born 23 Feb 1822 baptised 7 April 1822 Jabez 13 March 1824, baptised 25 April 1824; married Jane Cash Hannah, born 12 May 1826, baptised 20 Aug 1826. Ann, born 16 Aug 1827, baptised 2 Dec 1827

Harvey, Simeon, Asaph, Austin and Henry were born when the family lived in Brownhills, they then moved to Tunstall where the rest of their children were born.  The entry for Christopher Christian though does state that Aaron's wife was Sarah but the parents of Sarah were shown to be the same, i.e. Samuel and Hannah Harvey.

IGI has a marriage for Samuel Harvey and Hannah Pepper at Keele, Staffs on 26 May 1788 and a daughter Jane was baptised 6 Sep 1789 at Wolstanton, but these entries need verifying.

I have just discovered a Staffordshire website which contained some information on various people within the Jackson Family research: http://www.staffspasttrack.org.uk/ - to navigate around this website - choose a locality on the map which appears on the left of the screen - I chose "the Potteries" and subsequently another map appeared; I then chose "Burslem" and then selected the "View records" button and amongst the items available was "A List of Persons Receiving Relief from the Parish of Wolstanton - from the Enoch Wood scrapbook".

I found that -

Elijah Price, Shoe Maker of Burslem, and father of Robert Price had received relief during 1830-31 because he was sick;

Aaron Leese, jnr of Tunstall, potter had received relief during the same period because he was unemployed.

---oOo---

1841 Census

Elijah and Mary Price were found to be living "Longport, Near Pack Horse", Burslem, Staffordshire in 1841:

Elijah Price,

age 50, a Shoe maker

Mary Price,

age 44

Harriett Ann, age 22, a Potter Sarah, age 20, a Potter

Mary,

age 18, a  Potter

William, age 15, a Potter Elijah, age 12, a Potter Isaac, age 7 Joseph, age 4 Robert, age 1
Only Mary Price was born out of County

The Leese family were found living in 'America', Tunstall:

Simeon Leese, age 30, Potter Ann Leese, age 20 Aron, age 7 Elizabeth, age 4
Jane, age 4 Eliza, age 2 John, one day

All were born in the county of Staffordshire.  There were also two people living at the same address, probably boarders, but only their 1st names were readable - Hannah Sl? age 25 and Sarah Sl?, age 15 both were shown to be 'Paintress' in the occupation column.  This page was very difficult to read.

On the enumerator's schedule, the entry above Simeon and Anns' household in Tunstall showed Aaron Leese, age 50, occupation painter, born in County. Could this be Simeon's father?  I think the following entry is the more likely Aaron and Jane Leese, living at John Street, Tunstall:

Aaron Leese, age 50, Potter J. Jane Leese, age 50 Christopher, age 20, Potter J. Anne, age 20
Jabez, age 15, Potter Ap. Ann, age 13

All were shown as born in the county of Staffordshire with the exception of Aaron.

I searched the 1841 Census for Ann Leese's parents, John and Elizabeth Poulson and this could be them, living at Well Street, Tunstall:

John Poulson, age 55, Baker
