I have been somewhat reluctant to start researching the Jacksons, my husband Barry's family, because its a frequently occurring surname and I have been concentrating on the family research on my side of the family.  However following a query from someone who found my website, I thought I'd make a start.

We had various certificates which Barry's father, Robert Jackson (known as Bob) had saved and I started with them -

For Robert Jackson, though we had only found the small birth certificate and obtained the full certificate for more information.

Bob was born on 9 October 1902 in we believed Cudworth, Barnsley.  On this small certificate it gives Place of Birth Registration District as Barnsley; Sub-district as Darton. The full certificate reveals more -

I hereby certify that the above is a true Copy of an Entry of Birth in a Register Book in my custody

Witness by hand this 4th day of November 1927

Signed by Superintendent Registrar P E Rowland

This Birth Certificate was a copy applied for by John Jackson, himself - his address at this time was 20 Park Street sign for Hot LanePark Avenue, CarcroftBentley Moor Lane, CarcroftAvenue, Carcroft, Nr Doncaster on 3 November 1927. This is shown on the back of the copy birth certificate and appears as a printed header - NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE ACTS, 1911 TO 1920 AND UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE ACT 1920.  Then details of the person who applied for the copy of the birth certificate as detailed above.  John must have been 67 years of age when he applied for his birth certificate. On 8 May 2006, Barry and I journeyed to Carcroft and found Park Avenue - some of the houses are still standing but the even numbers start at 24 and there are some newer properties where No. 20 would have been. Picture No.1 shows the sign for Hot Lane in Burslem where John was born.   Picture No.2 is the start of the houses currently standing on Park Avenue, at Carcroft, the newer houses are shown on the right.  Picture No. 3 shows Bentley Moor Lane this is where the family lived in 1931 - there is no residential property left, only industrial units on both sides of this road.

The next certificate I sent for was the marriage certificate for John and Ann Bloor -

This document shows that Robert Price was born in abt 1839 and Eliza Lees in abt 1838.   The Residence at the time of marriage is hard to read but just might have been Dale Hale*.  Also the name of Eliza Lees's father has been transcribed as 'Samuel' when in various Census returns its shown as Simeon.  I have queried this with the GRO and they relooked at the original Marriage Certificate and confirmed that the name of Eliza's father was definitely given as 'Samuel' on the certificate. We believe the error is on the certificate as we can't trace a Samuel Lees who matches any of our information.

* http://www.thepotteries.org/did_you/003.htm Finding this site on the Internet, led me to believe that the residence on the marriage certificate was indeed Dale Hall.Return to top

I sent for a birth certificate for the only Eliza LEES I could find on any of the birth lists that was a near match - that was found on Staffordshire BMD - the certificate arrived on 26 May 2005 and if this is 'our' Eliza, reveals her Mother and Father as Simeon and Ann Lees (formerly Poulson):

The person compiling the Bishop Transcripts for the estalished church at this period didn't mention occupations on marriage records but the nonconformists registers did give 3 generations of names on baptisms.  Searching these Non-conformist records for Staffordshire, I found several baptism entries for children of Simeon and Ann in the registers for the Wesleyan Chapel, Tunstall in the Parish of Wolstanton -

Page 96: No.703 Herbert the son of Simeon Leese, Tunstall in the Parish of Wolstanton in the County of Stafford, Printer, and of Ann his wife who was the daughter of John and (Blank) Poulson born (blanks) And was solemnly baptized with Water in the name of the father, of the son, and of the Holy Ghost, on the Twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord 1832 by me John Brandreth

A previous record from the Wesleyan Chapel at Tunstall showed -

No.39 Simeon the son of Aaron Lees of Tunstall in the Parish of Burslem in the County of Stafford (Potter) and of Jane his wife who was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Harvey was born on the Twentieth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven.  And solemnly baptized with Water in the name of the father, of the son, and of the Holy Ghost, on Ninth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven, by me J. D. Burton.

The above register entry showed another two generations;

Aaron Lees and Jane Harvey 3 x Great Grandparents and

Samuel and Hannah Harvey 4 x Great Grandparents

All children of Aaron and Jane, shown on the above records were:

Harvey, born 15 May 1808 baptised 4 June; Married Maria Machin 26 Jun 1830 in Newcastle under Lyme Simeon (as above) Asaph, born 10 June 1813, baptised 17 June 1813; Married Elizabeth Foster, daughter of John & Sarah Foster Austin, born 3 July 1815, baptised 30 July 1815 Henry, born 5 May 1817, baptised 6 July 1817
Christopher Christian, born 4 Nov 1819, baptised 5 Dec 1819 Jabez Septamus born 23 Feb 1822 baptised 7 April 1822 Jabez 13 March 1824, baptised 25 April 1824; married Jane Cash Hannah, born 12 May 1826, baptised 20 Aug 1826. Ann, born 16 Aug 1827, baptised 2 Dec 1827

Harvey, Simeon, Asaph, Austin and Henry were born when the family lived in Brownhills, they then moved to Tunstall where the rest of their children were born.  The entry for Christopher Christian though does state that Aaron's wife was Sarah but the parents of Sarah were shown to be the same, i.e. Samuel and Hannah Harvey.

IGI has a marriage for Samuel Harvey and Hannah Pepper at Keele, Staffs on 26 May 1788 and a daughter Jane was baptised 6 Sep 1789 at Wolstanton, but these entries need verifying.

I have just discovered a Staffordshire website which contained some information on various people within the Jackson Family research: http://www.staffspasttrack.org.uk/ - to navigate around this website - choose a locality on the map which appears on the left of the screen - I chose "the Potteries" and subsequently another map appeared; I then chose "Burslem" and then selected the "View records" button and amongst the items available was "A List of Persons Receiving Relief from the Parish of Wolstanton - from the Enoch Wood scrapbook".

I found that -

Elijah Price, Shoe Maker of Burslem, and father of Robert Price had received relief during 1830-31 because he was sick;

Aaron Leese, jnr of Tunstall, potter had received relief during the same period because he was unemployed.

---oOo---

1841 Census

Elijah and Mary Price were found to be living "Longport, Near Pack Horse", Burslem, Staffordshire in 1841:

Elijah Price,

age 50, a Shoe maker

Mary Price,

age 44

Harriett Ann, age 22, a Potter Sarah, age 20, a Potter

Mary,

age 18, a  Potter

William, age 15, a Potter Elijah, age 12, a Potter Isaac, age 7 Joseph, age 4 Robert, age 1
Only Mary Price was born out of County

The Leese family were found living in 'America', Tunstall:

Simeon Leese, age 30, Potter Ann Leese, age 20 Aron, age 7 Elizabeth, age 4
Jane, age 4 Eliza, age 2 John, one day

All were born in the county of Staffordshire.  There were also two people living at the same address, probably boarders, but only their 1st names were readable - Hannah Sl? age 25 and Sarah Sl?, age 15 both were shown to be 'Paintress' in the occupation column.  This page was very difficult to read.

On the enumerator's schedule, the entry above Simeon and Anns' household in Tunstall showed Aaron Leese, age 50, occupation painter, born in County. Could this be Simeon's father?  I think the following entry is the more likely Aaron and Jane Leese, living at John Street, Tunstall:

Aaron Leese, age 50, Potter J. Jane Leese, age 50 Christopher, age 20, Potter J. Anne, age 20
Jabez, age 15, Potter Ap. Ann, age 13

All were shown as born in the county of Staffordshire with the exception of Aaron.

I searched the 1841 Census for Ann Leese's parents, John and Elizabeth Poulson and this could be them, living at Well Street, Tunstall:

John Poulson, age 55, Baker Elizabeth, age 50 Edgar, age 20, Potter Henry, age 10, Potter

Only John was shown to be born outside Staffordshire - All others shown as born in the county

Or there was another John and Elizabeth but they were in Clerkenwell, Borough of Finsbury:

John Poulson, age 47, Stone Merchant* Elizabeth, age 44* John, age 9 Christopher, age 1
Sarah Wood, age 30, Ind.* Mary Wathley, age 20, F.S.* Mary Bond, age 18, F.S.

* = born outside county - all others shown as born in the county

I found the above couple in 1861 where it stated John was born Staffs, Stoke on Trent; Elizabeth born in Devonshire

John Jackson, senior was living with his parents, Hamlet and Elizabeth Jackson in New Street, Shelton:

Hamlet Jackson, age 35, Brick Maker J Elizabeth, age 40, Brick Maker J John, age 15, Brick Maker J

Ellen, age 14, Pottery Lathe

Turner J

Harriet, age 9

Mary, age 7

All were born in the county of Staffordshire

In the fiches for St John the Evangelist, Hanley I found a baptism for Hamlet Jackson, born 27th December 1799; baptised 5 Jan 1800, parents Jos and Ellen Jackson; and on the IGI a marriage for Hamlet Jackson and Elizabeth Bowers, taking place at Norton In the Moors, Staffs on 2 July 1820.

In the 1851 Census,  Elijah Price and his family were living in Mount Pleasant, Burslem -

Elijah Price,

age 64, a  Cordwainer, born Stafford, Wolstanton

Mary Price, wife,

age 56, born Castleford

Mary Price,  daughter,

age 25, a  Potter Transferer, born Stafford,  Wolstanton

Isac Price,  son,

age 15, a  Potter Apprentice Presser, born Stafford,  Wolstanton

Joseph Price,  son,

age 13, a  Potter Apprentice Painter, born Stafford,  Wolstanton

Robert Price,  son,

age 11, a  Potter runs Moulds, 24 born Stafford,  Burslem

Frederick John Price,  grandson,

age 8,  born Stafford,  Wolstanton

Prudence Price,  granddaughter,

age 4, born Stafford,  Wolstanton

James Price,  grandson, age 7m, born Stafford,  Wolstanton

Also in 1851 - Living at 47 Sneyd Street, Tunstall, lodging with the James Colly family were:

Simeon Leese, Lodger,

age 40, Married, a  Potter Printer, born Tunstall

Ann Leese, Lodger,

age 35, Married, born Tunstall

Aron Leese, Lodger, unmarried, age 15,  a  Coal Miner, born Tunstall

Jane Leese, Lodger,

age 12, Potter Paper Cutter, born Tunstall

Betsy Leese, Lodger, age 12, Potter Paper Cutter, born Tunstall

Eliza Leese, Lodger,

age 10, Potter Paper Cutter, born Tunstall

Amey Leese, Lodger,

age 7, Scholar, born Tunstall

John Leese, Lodger,

age 8, Forge boy, born Tunstall

I'm not yet sure whether this Leese family is our connection, but it is the closest yet.  And this could be Simeon's parents at Globe Street, Burslem:

Aaron Lees, Head,

age 64, Marr, a  Potter Manager, born Stafford're, Hulme

Jane Lees, Wife,

age 61, Marr, born Stafford're, Tunstall

Anne Lees, daur, unmarried, age 22,  a  Potter Burnsher, born Stafford're, Tunstall

Anne Lees, daur in law, widow, age 30,  a  Potter Transferer, born Stafford're, Burslem

Looking for the Poulson family in 1851, I found a John Poulson, widower:

John Jackson, by 1851, now married to Ann Bloor was lodging with the Lowe family in the Hamlet of Sneyd  at Holecroft:

Joseph LOWE, Head, marr, age 28, Potter Slap Bedder(or beater), born Burslem, Staffordsh. Elizabeth LOWE, Head, marr, age 24, Potter Wheel  Turner, born Burslem, Staffordsh. John JACKSON, lodger, marr, age 25, Brickmaker, born Burslem, Staffordsh. Ann JACKSON, wife, marr, age 22, born Tunstall, Staffordsh. Harriet JACKSON, daur,  age 3 mo, born Burslem, Staffordsh. Mary HIBBERT, lodger, Marr, age 52, employee at Paint Bank, born Bury Lancashire.

John's parents were living in Hotlane, Sneyd Parish, Burslem - in the same household was their two unmarried daughters and daughter Ellen, married to John Fox and their family:

Hamblet Jackson, Head, Marr, age 51, Labourer, born Staffordsh, Burslem

Elizabeth Jackson, Wife, Marr, age 54, Domestic, born Staffordsh,Tunstall

Harriet JACKSON, daur,  Unm, age 21, Potter, born Staffordsh, Burslem

Mary JACKSON, daur,  Unm, age 18, Potter, born Staffordsh, Burslem

Ellen Fox, wife, marr, age 26, Domestic, born Staffordsh, Burslem  Hamblet Fox, son,  age 7, labourer's son, born Staffordsh, Burslem Elizabeth Fox, daur,  age 5, labourer's son[sic], born Staffordsh, Burslem John Fox, son,  age 2, labourer's son, born Staffordsh, Burslem

Note spelling of Hamlet.  Ellen Jackson had married John Fox in 1843 at Shelton St Marks.Return to top

Present at death of Mary was Neighbour, Henry Spencer.   There was a witness named "Sarah Spencer"  on the marriage certificate of Robert Price and Eliza Lees.  I looked on FreeBMD for a marriage for Sarah Price,  daughter of Elijah and Mary Price, shown as age 20 in 1841.  There is a marriage registered Wolstanton in June 1850 and amongst the possible bridegrooms given on the list is a Henry Spencer vol 17, page 373; this entry in the 1851 Census might be Henry Spencer and his wife Sarah living in "New Bag St"?, Burslem:

Henry Spencer, Head, Marr, age 24, Joiner, born Stafford, Burslem

Sarah Spencer, Wife, Marr, age 28, Potter Transferer, born Stafford, Burslem

This is Henry and Sarah Spencer living at 40 Ellgreave Street, Burslem in 1861:

Henry Spencer, Head, Marr, age 34, Wheelwright, born Stafford, Longport Sarah Spencer, Wife, Marr, age 39,  born Stafford, Chesterton

Frederick L Price,  Boarder, Unm,

age 18, Wheelwright, born Staffordshire,  Burslem

Thomas Seckerson,

Boarder, Unm, age 17, Potter, born Staffordshire,  Burslem

Frederick Price could be Sarah's brother.

Shown at No.44 Ellgreave Street, Burslem in 1871:

Henry Spencer, Head, Marr, age 44, Joiner, born Stafford, Burslem Sarah Spencer, Wife, Marr, age 49, born Stafford, Chesterton

1861 Census

I believe this is Robert and Eliza Price living at 23 Reid Street, Burslem:

Robert Price,  Head,

age 21, Potter, born Staffordshire,  Burslem

Eliza Price, wife, age 22, born Staffordshire, Tunstall

Frederick L Price,  son,

age 1, born Staffordshire,  Burslem

Mary A Price,  daughter

age 1 month,  born Staffordshire,  Burslem

Also Residing  at 23 Reid Street, but listed as a separate schedule were -

Simeon Lees,  Head,

age 49, Potter, born Staffordshire,  Tunstall

Ann Lees,  Wife,

age 48,  born Staffordshire,  Stoke on Trent

John Lees,  Son,

age 20, Potter, born Staffordshire,  Tunstall

Mary Lees,  Grandaughter , age 4, Scholar, born Staffordshire,  Tunstall

I found John and Ann Jackson at 99 Hot Lane, Burslem:

John Jackson, Head, age 38, Brickmaker, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Ann Jackson, Wife, age 32,  born Staffordshire, Burslem Harriet Jackson, daughter, age 10,  born Staffordshire, Burslem Ann Jackson, daughter, age 2,  born Staffordshire, Burslem John Jackson, Son, age 7 months,  born Staffordshire, Burslem

And John's father Hamlet Jackson was still residing with his daughter and son-in-law in Hot Lane at No.41:

John Fox, Head, marr, age 39, Brick maker, born Staffordshire, Stoke upon Trent

Ellen Fox, wife, marr, age 31, Brick maker's wife, born Staffordshire, Wolstanton Hamlet Fox, son,  Unm, age 16, Potter's labourer, born Staffordshire, Shelton Mary Ann Fox, daur,   age 9, Potter, born Staffordshire, Burslem George Fox, son,  age 7, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem
Elizabeth Fox, daur, age 5, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem Elija Fox, son, age 2, born Staffordshire, Burslem Hamlet Jackson, Father in Law, Wid, age 63, Brickmaker, born Staffordshire, Burslem Mary Wood, Visitor, Sister in Law, age 28, Potter's wife, born Staffordshire,  Wolstanton

Mary Wood, Visitor was Hamlet Jackson's daughter who had married William Wood at Bucknall, St Mary's in 1852.

I have found a possible death of Hamlet Jackson's wife, Elizabeth on FreeBMD - March 1861 Registered Wolstanton Vol 6b, page 91 and also a death for Hamlet Jackson in March 1867 vol 6b page 116 at the age of 67 - Barry's 2 x Great Grandparents:

John and Ann Jackson were still in Hot Lane, Burslem but in 1871 had moved to No.94:

John Jackson, Head, Mar, age 47, Fireman Brick Maker, born Staffordshire, Burslem Ann Jackson, Wife, Mar, age 42,  born Staffordshire, Burslem Ann Jackson, daughter, age 12,  Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem John Jackson, Son, age 10,  Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Thomas Jackson*, son, age 7, Scholar

 born Staffordshire, Burslem

Elizabeth Jackson, daughter, age 6, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Emily Jackson, daughter, age 3, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem

* Adding my Jackson family tree to ancestry.co.uk, I have discovered someone else researching this Jackson family - Brian Jackson is a descendant of Thomas Jackson, 2nd son of John and Ann Jackson.

John and Ann's daughter Harriet had married Thomas Tomkinson in 1869 and they were living at 109 Hot Lane:

Thomas Tomkinson, Head, Mar, age 23,  Engine Driver Colliery, born Staffordshire, Smallthorne Harriet Tomkinson, wife, age 20,  born Staffordshire, Burslem

Simeon and Ann Lees (now spelt Leese) were living at Sneyd Croft, Burslem, with their son John and his family:

Head:

John H Leese,

age 30, Potter, born Staffordshire,  Tunstall

Lucy Leese, wife, age 29,   born Staffordshire, Burslem

John Henry Leese, son, aged 4, scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Ann Leese, daughter, age 1, born Staffordshire, Burslem Simeon Leese, Father, age 59, Potters Painter, born Staffordshire,  Tunstall

Ann Leese,  Mother,

age 57,  born Staffordshire,  Stoke

John had married Lucy Eardley in 1864 - found on Staffordshire BMD.

I found a Robert and Eliza Price living on Dale Street, Burslem - Head of household was Sarah Paule - this was the nearest match, but I'm not that certain its 'our' Price family:

Head: Sarah Paule, Marr, age 66, Potter's Transferer, born Hanley, Staffs

Robert Price,  Son in law, Marr, age 36, Potter's Presser, born Burslem,  Staffs

Eliza Price, Marr, wife, age 36, Potter's Transferer, born Burslem,  Staffs Robert Price, son, age 4, born Burslem,  Staffs Elizabeth Price, daur, age 2, born Burslem,  Staffs

Looking at the original the name of Sarah looks more like 'Poole' - the census record shows Robert Price as "Son in law" - this makes me think that I may have the wrong family.  I have searched for Sarah Poole in other Census records and can only find her married to a Hamlet Poole, but can't find evidence as to why Robert Price should be her "son in law".  Sarah and Hamlet Poole do have a daughter Eliza but she is 10 years older than the above Eliza.

1881 Census

In 1881, living in Burslem at 37 Reid Street was Eliza Price, the widow of Robert Price and their daughter Eliza, who was later to marry John Jackson (Barry's Grandparents):

Eliza PRICE, Head, Widow, age 43, born Tunstall, Stafford, Occupation Potter Robert Price, Son, age 13, born Burslem, Stafford, Occupation Potter Eliza PRICE, Daughter, unmarried, age 11, born Burslem, Stafford, Scholar Joseph Price, son, age 9, born Burslem, Stafford, Scholar

I found a death on FreeBMD which could be Robert Price; registered at Wolstanton June 1876 age 37 Vol 6b page 102. This death certificate shows:

According to Chambers 21st Century Dictionary, Phthisis is a wasting disease such as tuberculosis.  I couldn't find Eliza's parents Simeon and Ann Leese in the 1881 Census, but searching the death index records I found their deaths - like Robert, their deaths occurred at 37 Reid Street, Burslem:

Thanks to Andrew MacIntosh from Denbighshire, for getting in touch with me.  Andrew informed me that John and Ann Jackson split up between 1871 and 1881.  Ann married James Abbotts (b 1816).  John Jackson relocates to Runcorn in Cheshire before moving to Blackburn and he is shown below in the 1881 Census living with his 'new' wife Elizabeth at 15 Pleasant View, Blackburn, Lancashire -

John Jackson, Head, aged 58; born Potteries, Stafford - a Brick Burner  Elizabeth Jackson, Wife, aged 48; born Northwich, Cheshire George Jackson, son, aged 17; born Runcorn, Cheshire - a Brick Labourer John Jackson, son, aged 12; born Runcorn, Cheshire - a Cotton Weaver Charles Jackson, son, aged 7; born Runcorn, Cheshire - a Scholar

Elizabeth Jackson, daughter, aged 5, born Runcorn, Cheshire - a Scholar

Andrew is unsure whose children these are, they all are recorded as born in Cheshire; Andrew thinks that possibly the two younger children were John's but then speculates that they all four could be John's as, continuing the speculation, he suspects that John was having an affair with Elizabeth whilst living with Ann.  Return to top

NOTE: One doubt about this family though is that the same couple are together in the previous Census records, living in Parrs Square, Runcorn, Cheshire in 1871 and in Back Mersy Street, Runcorn in 1861.  I have also found a death for a John Jackson registered at Wolstanton  in 1871 and sent for the Certificate - this seems to indicate that Ann was a widow when she married or just moved in with James Abbots and the John and Elizabeth Jackson, mentioned above are not 'our' Jackson family.  Details found on John's death certificate are shown here:

Andrew's connection is John and Ann Jackson's daughter Ann who left home and married John Moore in 1876. In 1881, they were living at 8 Davenport Square, Burslem - John and Ann Moore are Andrew's 2 x Great Grandparents:

Head:

John Moore,

age 29, Potter, born Staffordshire,  Tunstall

Ann, wife, age 23,   Potter, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Agnes, Daur, aged 5, born Staffordshire, Burslem

John, son, age 3, born Staffordshire, Burslem Rueben, son, age 1, born Staffordshire,  Burslem

Mary Clewlow,  Lodger,

Mar, age 21, Potter, born Staffordshire,  Burslem

Searching the 1881 Census I found John Jackson (Barry's Grandfather) at 94 Hot Lane, Burslem, Stafford, living with his Mother and Step-father:

James ABBOTTS, Head, age 65, born Hanley, Stafford, a Brickmaker's Labourer Ann ABBOTTS, wife, age 52, born Tunstall, Stafford John Jackson, Son, unmarried, age 20, born Burslem, Stafford, Labourer Elizabeth Jackson, Daughter, unmarried, age 16, born Burslem, Stafford; a Potter Emily Jackson, Daughter,  age 13, born Burslem, Stafford; Servant Domestic

James Abbotts had lived at No.1 Hot Lane for a number of years with his wife Sarah and their children.  I have been unable to find a marriage for James Abbotts and Ann Jackson to date, but I have found a marriage for an Ann Jackson to a George Prince in 1872*; a death for George Prince in 1875; and then a 1878 marriage for James Abbotts and an Ann Prince.  I then sent for this 1878 marriage certificate to establish whether or not this is Barry's Great Grandmother's 3rd marriage and also a death certificate for Ann Abbotts in 1882. The marriage certificate arrived first:

I have been corresponding with an ancestor of James Abbotts, Melody Wright, who contacted me as we both have James Abbotts on our trees on Ancestry.co.uk; Melody confirmed the name of James 1st wife - Melody states "James is my 3xgreat grandad & was married to Sarah Till. I'm now going to send for the death certs. It all adds up, from his father Samuel to being a brickmaker."

*I found a possible George Prince in the 1871 Census living in Hot Lane - a boarder at No. 105:

John Poole, Head, Widower, age 49, Blacksmith, born Staffordshire, Stoke George Prince, Boarder, Widower, age 46,  Potter, born Canada, North America Joseph Prince, Boarder, age 15,  Collier, born Staffordshire, Burslem Sarah Jane Prince, Boarder, age 7,  born Staffordshire, Burslem

In 1861 George is shown living in Burslem at 6 Kilncroft with his wife and two sons:

In the 1851 Census, George is shown living with his widowed mother who hails from Virginia, USA, they were residing at Kilncroft:

Rebecca Prince, Head, Widow, age 55, Keeps House, born Virginia, America - British subject George Prince, Son, Mar, age 26, Potter, born America, America born subject of England Jane Prince, Daur in Law, Mar, age 30, Emp at a school?, born Staffs, Burslem Mary Ann Prince, Daur, U, age 22, Emp at a school?, born Staffs, Burslem Ellen Prince, Daur, U, age 20, Emp at a school?, born Staffs, Burslem John Prince, Grandson, age 5,  at home, born Staffs, Burslem Ellen Prince, Granddaur, age 12 months,  at home, born Staffs, Burslem

The IGI has a marriage for George Prince and Jane Cartledge on 8 November 1845 at Burslem, St John's and George's father was shown as John Prince.

The marriage certificate for Ann Jackson's 2nd marriage to George Prince shows -

By 1881, Harriet, John and Ann Jackson's daughter Harriet, had moved to Norton le Moors  - she is shown with husband Thomas and their family living in Sparrow Street but where the address should be shown, the enumerator has written "nk" - unknown - the previous entry address was 16 Sparrow Street:

Thomas Tomkinson, Head, Mar, age 32,  Engine Tenter, born Staffordshire, Norton le Moors Harriet, wife, age 31,  Engine Tenter wife, born Staffordshire, Burslem Thomas, Son, age 9, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Norton le Moors Arthur, Son, age 6, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Norton le Moors  John H., Son, age 1, born Staffordshire, Norton le Moors Thomas, Father, Widower, age 66, Retired Auctioneer, born Cheshire, Macclesfield

and John and Ann Jackson's son, Thomas was living in lodgings in Commercial Street, Burslem - he was age 18 and working as a Potter.  His landlord was Innkeeper, Henry Scott. Thomas married Lavinia Yoxall on 28 July 1884 in Longton, Staffs.

1891 Census

As mentioned at the beginning of this page John Jackson (junior) married Eliza Price on 21 September 1889.  I found their entry on Ancestry.co.uk living at Broad Meadow, Chesterton, Newcastle under Lyme:

John Jackson, Head, married, aged 29, born Burslem, Coal Miner

Eliza Jackson, wife, aged 21,

born Burslem

Elizabeth J Jackson, daughter, aged 1, born Burslem

Still living at 37 Reid Street, Burslem was Barry's Great Grandmother, Eliza, widow of Robert Price (formerley Eliza Lees):

Eliza PRICE, Head, Widow, age 52,  Potter's Transferer, born Staffs, Tunstall

Robert Price, Son, single, age 23, Potter's Presser, born Staffs, Burslem

Jos Price, son, single, age 19, Grocer's Porter, born Staffs, Burslem

Visiting Barnsley Archives on 29 November 2004, as there was no name index, I trawled through a couple of microfiches for Cudworth - this was where Barry's father was born in 1902 and I wanted to establish if the family were there for the Census in 1901.  Bingo! - I found them at the end of the second fiche:

Living in Jubilee Terrace, Royston, Barnsley

John Jackson, Head, married, aged 39, born Stafford, Coal Hewer Eliza Jackson, wife, aged 31, born Stafford Elizabeth Jackson, daughter, aged 11, born Stafford John Jackson, son, aged 9, born Stafford

Arthur Jackson, son, aged 3,

born Stafford

Eliza Jackson, daughter, aged 2,

born Yorks, Royston

Frank Jackson, son,  1 month, birthplace not given

This Census schedule shows that the Jackson family were still in Staffordshire for the birth of Arthur, and by the time Eliza was born they were living in Royston.  I visited Barnsley Archives to try to find the baptisms of John and Eliza's children in the Royston records.  I did find three baptised at Royston St Matthews but the writing became so faint I could not read the latter entries on that particular fiche.  I asked the archivist if they had the original records;  I was told that they did but they were not yet available for viewing as they were still being catalogued.  Here are the records I did manage to find, unfortunately they do not include Barry's father Robert:

Robert Price and Mary A Goodwin's marriage in 1896, St John, Burslem, is recorded on Staffordshire BMD

The 1911 Census has arrived! and the first person I found was Eliza Price; still living with her son Robert's family but at a different address - 15 Primitive Street, Smallthorne, Staffs:

Robert Price, Son, age 43,  Holloware Presser - Potter, Worker, born Staffs, Burslem

There were extra colums headed "Particulars as to Marriage" and this was divided into 4 columns - Marital status; How long the marriage had lasted; Total children born alive; No. still living; No. who had died.  In this case the columns showed:

And her daughter Eliza and son-in-law John Jackson, was living at 31 William Street, Highgate, Goldthorpe - this gave the following information with the details of the "Particulars of Marriage" showing 21 years married, and the details as to number of children born/died:

In 2007, I joined the Blo(o)r(e) Society, an association for those interested in the history and genealogy of the Blore, Bloor and Bloore surnames.  I have attended two of their meetings - in 2007 at Stockport and on 10 May 2008 met with them again in Hanley, Stoke on Trent.

The Society's Librarian Peter Hodgkinson found what could be the marriage of Hamlet Bloore's parents.  According to the IGI Sarah Clare married John Bloor at Norton In the Moors on 5 June 1808.  Peter thought that there were four baptisms which could be their children:

Hamlet born 1809 at Burslem; Timothy 1813 at Hanley; Thirza 1817 at Burslem St. John; and Lewis 1819 at Burslem St John.

I need to order the various parish record films to find out more information.  Return to top

Whilst in Hanley, Barry and I took the opportunity of visiting several of the places mentioned on certificates and on census returns - here's the photographs:

We were lucky to be there when the chapel had an 'Open Day'.  They are fund raising to help pay for the restoration work, see http://www.bethesda-stoke.org.uk/ for more information.

7-9 Hot Lane sign - this Lane played a large part in the life of the Jackson family - Hamlet and Elizabeth Jackson were residing here in the 1861 Census at No.41 and both died there in 1861 and 1867 respectively; John and Ann Jackson were also there, shown in the 1861 and the 1871 Census at No. 94; and their son John was born at No.99 Hot Lane in 1860.  John Jackson senior died in Hot Lane in 1871; Ann's 2nd husband, George Prince lived at No.105 and Ann was shown to be still living at No. 94 with her 3rd husband James Abbotts in the 1881 Census and at No.66 on her death.  This area has no housing now just some industrial buildings and some derelict ones including an old school complex (photos 8,9 above) and a Scout HQ building (photos 10-12 below) which is now boarded up. A war memorial, dedicated to the men of Hot Lane and Elder Road who died in WW1,  is built into the wall of this building.

A widow, Eliza Bloor, was living in Nile Street with her family, including a daughter, Ann in 1841. As these pictures show the area has a lot of derelict factories, buildings and shops (14,15) including a large complex belonging to Royal Doulton. Picture 13 shows a few houses still remain on Nile Street, opposite the closed Royal Doulton factory (16).

17-18

Simeon and Ann Leese were living in Sneyd Street in the 1851 Census - this is quite a long road, with mostly modern housing and shops.  The Raven pub is placed at one end of Sneyd Street. John and Ann Jackson also lived near by in the hamlet of Sneyd at Holecroft.

The Reid Street sign on this beer-off and the oldest building left on Reid Street. See above website for Reid Street and Orme Street in 1900  - this map shows extensive terraced housing, now no longer there.  The Price and Leese families lived on Reid Street; Robert and Eliza Price were living at No.23 Reid Street in 1861 and living with them at that time were Simeon and Ann Leese.  Elijah Price died at No.31, Simeon and Ann Leese and also Robert Price died at No. 37, their death certificates giving Reid Street as their place of death. The 1881 Census shows Eliza Price (Robert's widow) still living at No. 37 Reid Street with her daughter Eliza age 11 (Barry's Grandmother).

23-24

Eliza Price was born at 29 Orme Street on 10 August 1869.   This sign is in front of the Travellers Rest pub.  As I was taking these photos a car drew up alongside the pub and the driver asked me why I was taking the photographs.  I explained that Barry's Grandmother was born on Orme Street and he very kindly invited us in for a drink "on the house" - the people in the car were the proprietors of the pub. This was very much appreciated as it was an extremely hot day!

30 http://www.thepotteries.org/church/burslem/st_pauls1.htm select this link to see the original St Paul's Church. This has been replaced by an ultra modern building which looks nothing like a church except that it has a cross on the front. The sign in the grounds was dilapidated and almost covered by bushes. The church was behind locked gates, it did look as if it was no longer used.  John Jackson and Eliza Price were married in the old St Paul's Church on 21 September 1889

We can't identify anyone on the third or fourth picture which obviously are school photographs.

The other photos are  - Photo No.1: John Jackson with two of his sons, we think Robert is the one on the left.  Photo No.2 shows Eliza Jackson (nee Price) with two of their children. Photo No.5: is of Royston St Matthews Wesleyan Methodist Church where some of the Jackson children were baptised whilst living in Royston - now a fitness studio.

Grave of Doris M. Jackson and her brother Arthur a\t Arksey

Another document in our possession is a Deed of Conveyance relating to the interment of Doris May Jackson - a date alongside the name was 14 December 1922; No in R.B. 110 - these details appeared in a small vertical side table.

The Grave Space was purchased by John Jackson for £1.1.0, 1 guinea!   This gave John exclusive rights to Grave Space No 142, Section D, in Arksey, in the Urban District of Bentley with Arksey.  John Jackson was living at 14 Esk Terrace, Bentley at this time - 24 January 1923.  The inscription on this photograph though states "In loving memory of" across the top and "Doris M Jackson 1906-1922" on one side "Arthur Jackson 1897-1964" on the right hand side; finished off below with "Safe in the arms of Jesus".  Doris was 16 when she died; Arthur much older about 66 years of age.  Searching on the Death registers, I found Doris died Oct-Dec quarter of 1922 age 16 Vol 9c p751 registered at Doncaster; the only record in 1964 which I could find for Arthur was in April quarter of 1964 Registered at Don Valley Vol 28 page 476 the age given is 66.

Amongst Barry's father's papers were two invoices issued by R. Bletcher, Wheelwright, Joiner and Undertaker of Skellow, Nr Doncaster.  Both these invoices were for funerals, one dated March 12th 1930 addressed to Mrs Jackson of Park Avenue Carcroft - looking on the Death index for the first quarter of 1930 there was a death of John Jackson, age 69 registered at Doncaster vol 9c, page 868:

Present at death was Mr R Jackson - this might have been Robert, Barry's father or Robert's brother, Ralph.

The second invoice from the same undertaker was this time addressed to Mr Jackson of Bentley Moor Lane and was dated April 6th 1931.  In the Death index, I found a death for Eliza Jackson, age 62, registered at Doncaster April quarter of 1931 vol 9c p836.

Eliza's death certificate shows she died on 3 April 1931 when the family were living in Bentley Moor Lane, Adwick le Street:
