HENRY HICKLING 1835-19??

Part of the Jackson Family History Research

Thanks to Genes Reunited, I have met a distant cousin who is also on the HICKLING trail. Carolynn Skelton*, known as Lynn, is also a descendent of George and Mary Hickling, through their son Henry - Henry Hickling is Lynn's Great Grandfather.

Henry appears in the 1841 Census with his parents at Hugglescote, Leicestershire -

George Hickling,

age 40, an Ag Lab

Mary, age 35 Francis*, age 12

John, age 10

James, age 8 Henry, age 6 Sarah, age 4 Elizabeth, age 4months

The 1851 Census shows the Hickling family, still living in Hugglescote, however on Ancestry.co.uk they have been transcribed as "Stickling" and although I have filled in the amendment form for each member of the family they still give preference to the wrong surname -

George Hickling,

age 53, Lab. on the Coal Pit Bank, b1798, Leicestershire, Hugglescote

Mary, age 48, b1803, Leicestershire, Markfield Francis*, Unmarried, age 23, Coal Miner, b1828, Leicestershire, Markfield  John, age 21, Coal Miner, b1830, Leicestershire, Markfield James, age 18, Coal Miner, b1833, Leicestershire, Markfield
Henry, age 16, Coal Miner, b1835, Leicestershire, Markfield Sarah, age 14, Runs Lace, b1837, Leicestershire, Markfield Elizabeth, age 10, Scholar, b1841, Leicestershire, Hugglescote William, age 7, Scholar, b1844, Leicestershire, Hugglescote Jane*, age 4, Scholar, b1847, Leicestershire, Hugglescote

*Lynn lives in Beighton and came to visit me on 12 July 2005, when we ploughed through our research files and I scanned photographs which can be seen further down this page.   Lynn and I went to visit Jump, near Wombwell where Henry Hickling and his family lived. Carolynn's Great Grandfather, George and Mary's son Henry had also moved up to Yorkshire, with his brothers to work in the collieries and had married Lucy Litchfield (Registered Barnsley, June 1860 v9c page 157) and in the 1861 Census their home is shown as 6 Hagues Row, Darfield, in the Wombwell district of Barnsley:

Henry Hickling, Head, age 26, married, Miner, born Leics, Markfield Lucy Hickling*, Wife, age 20, born Yorkshire, Worsboro Mary Ann, daughter, age 10 months, born Yorkshire, Wombwell

Lucy was born in 1840 at Worsborough Dale - her parents were William and Sarah Litchfield (nee Pickering; William was born in Hoyland in 1802; Sarah born 1808 in Hoyland; they were married in 1823 in Rotherham.

Henry and Lucys' growing family were residing at 108 Allotts Cotts (Cottages), Jump, Near Wombwell in the 1871 Census:

Henry Hickling, Head, Marr, age 35, Miner, born Leics, Markfield

Lucy Hickling, Wife, age 30, born Yorkshire, Worsboro

Mary, daughter, age 10, Scholar, born Yorkshire, Jump John, son, age 8, Scholar, born Yorkshire, Jump

George, son, age 6, Scholar, born Yorkshire, Jump

Henry, son, age 4, Scholar, born Yorkshire, Jump Mary, daughter, age 2, born Yorkshire, Jump Lucy, daughter, age 2 months, born Yorkshire, Jump Robert Elliss, Boarder,  Unmarried, age 45, Labourer, born Yorkshire, Darfield

Henry and Lucy were still living in Allotts Cottages, at Jump near Wombwell but had moved to No. 106

Henry Hickling, Head, Marr, age 46, Coal Miner, born Leics, Markfield Lucy Hickling, Wife, age 40, born Yorkshire, Worsboro Bridge Mary, daughter, age 20, unmarried, born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield John, son, age 18, unmarried, Coal Miner, born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield
George, son, age 16,  Coal Miner, born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield Harry, son, age 14,  Coal Miner, born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield Eliza, daughter, age 12, born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield Mary Jane, daughter, age 8, born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield
Emma, daughter, age 6, born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield Annie, daughter, age 4, born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield Lucy, daughter, age 2, born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield Francis, son, age 1,  born Yorkshire, Jump, Darfield Henry Musgrave, Boarder, age 24, Unmarried, Coal Miner, born Yorkshire, Barnsley

The 1891 Census shows George & Mary's son, Henry Hickling was living in Wombwell; probably at Jump, they were transcribed as sharing with the Watson family at 143 and 144 Brickyard - Schedule numbers 149 the Wilson Family; 150 Henry with his family; and 151 Henry Hickling jnr and his wife Isabella:

Henry Hickling, Head, Marr, age 57, Coal Miner, born Leicestershire, Mark Field Lucy Hickling, Wife, Marr, age 50, born Yorks, Worsbro John, son, single, age 28, a Coal Miner, born Yorks, Wombwell Lucy Hickling, daughter, age 12, born Yorks, Wombwell
Arthur Hickling, son, age 9, Scholar, born Yorks, Wombwell James Hickling, son, age 7, Scholar, born Yorks, Wombwell Henry Hickling Jun, Head, Marr, age 24, Coal Miner, born Yorks, Wombwell Isabella Hickling, Wife, Marr, age 18, born Yorks, Castleford

Looking in the Jump marriage registers, I found that Henry Hickling (age 23) had married Isabella Quick (age 17) on 27 April 1890; at the time of their marriage Henry's address was 116 Brick Yard and Isabella's was Allotts Buildings and her father was Joseph Quick, a Glass Blower.  Return to top

Also shown was the marriage of Henry and Lucy's daughter Eliza; she had married John Robert Watson on 19th July 1885; John was age 20, a Miner from Hoyland; father Henry Watson Barber; Eliza was age 16, Residence Wombwell, St George. They were shown on the same Census page as Henry and Lucy, and their address was the same 143 and 144 Brickyard, schedule 149:

John R Watson, Head, Marr, age 26, Coal Miner, born Yorks, Sheffield Eliza Watson, Wife, Marr, age 22, born Yorks, Wombwell Herbert, son,  age 5, Scholar, born Yorks, Wombwell Emma, daughter, age 2, born Yorks, Wombwell

1901 Census  - that reveals Henry and his wife Lucy were still residing in Brickyard, their house number though was now No. 137 and the locality named as Hemmingfield:

Henry Hickling, Head, Marr, age 67, Coal Miner, Hewer (below ground) born Leicesters, Mark Field

Lucy Hickling, Wife, Marr, age 60, born Yorks, Worsbro

Lucy Hickling, daughter, Single, age 23, born Yorks, Wombwell

Arthur Hickling, son, Single, age 19, Labourer above ground, born Yorks, Wombwell

James Hickling, son, Single, age 17, Coal Miner Trammer (below ground), born Yorks, Wombwell

Henry and Lucy's eldest son, John was living nearby at No.145 single with his housekeeper and her children; Annie Evans is also described as single, so the children might be John's but have Annie's name? -

John Hickling, Head, single, age 38, a Coal Miner Hewer, below ground, born Yorks, Wombwell

Annie Evans, Servant, Single, age 33, Housekeeper Dom, born Yorks, Elsecar

Eliza Evans, daughter, age 13,  born Yorks, Elsecar

Sarah E Evans, daughter, age 11,  born Yorks, Elsecar

John Evans, son,  age 8,  born Yorks, Elsecar  Alice Evans, daughter, age 5,  born Yorks, Elsecar Lucy Evans, daughter, age 3,  born Yorks, Elsecar Annie H Evans, daughter, age 3 months,  born Yorks, Wombwell

I have received an email from a descendant of John Hickling and Annie Evans - Chris Arkle:

"I was trying to trace my grandfathers family tree and came across your website. My grandfather was James Hickling Evans. He was the son of Annie Evans. I had got his birth certificate this morning and had been surprised that there was no fathers name on the certificate. James or Jim as I believe he was commonly called was born on the 18th February 1903 at 12 Brick Yard, Jump and as your site states maybe the son of John Hickling. From a brief family history that I am aware of he was also a coal miner but joined the Royal Horse Artillery and served in India.
He married Winifred Margaret Duff and they had two children Allan and Jane. He lived and worked in Merstham, Surrey until his death in I believe 1971. If you would like a copy of his birth certificate I can scan and copy it for you. I have printed the Hickling genealogy page and will show it to my mother Jane. I am trying to find his military records but have only just started tracing my mothers side of the family. Thanks for the great work on your site."

Chris has kindly forwarded a copy of his Grandfather's birth certificate which he was surprised to see did not show the father's name - however the birth was registered as "James Hickling":

* Photos No.1-3, 11, 12 and 18 have been sent from British Columbia, Canada by Carol Cannon.  Carol contacted me after she found I had "Henry Hickling b1835" on my tree on Ancestry.co.uk.

Henry Hickling and Lucy Litchfield were Carol's 2 x G Grandparents; her Great Grandparents were Henry Hickling b 1866 at Jump, Henry, known as Harry, married to Isabella Quick; and their daughter Lucy Hickling born 6 December 1902 was her Grandmother.

Lucy married Willie Smith 24 December 1921.  Lucy and Willie's daughter Jean is Carol's Mum.

Jean and her sister Vera and brother-in-law, Bill Hurley emigrated to Canada in 1952.  Their parents Lucy and Willie Smith followed in 1954.

Carol sending me photos 1 and 3 above wrote "I called Norman who is Sarah Hickling's oldest son to ask him about his Uncle Fred.  Fred's sister, Sarah Hickling (Bonser) has two sons.  Norman who lives in Montreal, Canada and Colin who still lives in Yorkshire, England.  He told me that Fred had gone to Germany in WWI and after the war got a good job there.  His wife didn't like it there and they came back to England where Fred got a job at the mine.  The coal tubs ran along the walls on a conveyer belt and Fred's clothes got caught on one of them and he got rolled between the tub and the wall thus his back got broken."
