HAMLET BLOOR 1809-18??

Part of the Jackson Family History Research

Hamlet Bloor is my husband, Barry Jackson's 2 x Great Grandfather; I have found a marriage which may be his whilst searching through the St John's Bishop Transcripts for the Parish of Burslem, but have not managed to discover any other mention of Hamlet within this film -

No. 73                  (Bagnall Beech

This may well be the marriage of Barry's 2 x Great Grandparents.   The witness Bagnall Beech was witness to many marriages throughout this period, he was probably one of the Church Wardens.

There is an IGI record for the baptism of Hamlet Bloor on 25 Jun 1809 in Burslem, Staffs where the parents were given as John and Sarah Bloore.  Another Jackson researcher, Andrew Mackintosh had found the actual baptism and the record stated John and Sarah Bloore of Dale Hall, which Andrew states was an area in Burslem.

I first found mention of Hamlet on the Marriage Certificate of my husband's Great Grandparents, which I obtained from the General Register Office:

John Jackson and Ann Bloor signed their mark and the Witnesses were John Bath and the mark of Mary Bath

certified to be a true copy of a Register of Marriages in the District above mentioned.

I next tried to find Hamlet in 1841, but no luck; I did however find an entry for Eliza Bloor which might be Ann Bloor's family in 1841 living on Nile Street, Burslem:

Eliza Bloor, age 35, Potter J James, age 13, Potter J* Ann, age 11, Potter J

Eliza, age 6,

Hezekial, age 7 months

Timothy Lockett, age 40, Potter J

All were born in the county of Staffordshire

I can't find Hamlet Bloor in the 1841 Census, but I may find his burial recorded in the Bishop Transcripts for Burslem.  I found the following entry in the 1840 baptisms in the Burslem Registers:

Nov 29

No.1789

Hezekial Lockett

Eliza

[Lodger’s child]

and then in 1843 I found the following burial:

Page 36 Hezekial Lockett Bloor No.286 - Burslem - Feb 28th - 2y 3 m - John Noble

and in 1849 the burial of Timothy Lockett:

P246 Timothy Lockett No.1962 - Hole House - July 17th - 54 years - H. C. Leaver

Finding someone else researching this Bloor family, I contacted Rodger Bloor and find that he is a descendant of Hamlet and Eliza's son James Bloor, shown on the above 1841 census, age 14. Rodger stated that ".I have searched and searched for information on James Bloor, Ann's brother. I know he married Mary Riley because I obtained the couple's child Charles Riley Bloor's death certificate. He immigrated with my great grandfather Joseph to the U.S. in the early 1880's. I am rather new to this research thing and I am still learning the ropes."

A small number of houses still remain on Nile StreetLooking up Nile Street from the Royal Doulton complexDerelict properties on Nile StreetRoyal Doulton's derelict factory Widow, Eliza Bloor, was living in Nile Street with her family, including a daughter, Ann in 1841. The area has a lot of derelict factories, buildings and shops (2 & 3) including a large complex belonging to Royal Doulton. Picture 1 shows a few houses still remain on Nile Street, opposite the closed Royal Doulton factory (4).

1851 Census

In the 1851 Census, James already married to Mary Riley was shown living in Clarence Street, Burslem:

James Bloor, Head, Marr,

age 24, a  Glass Maker, born Staffs., Burslem

Mary Bloor, wife, Marr,

age 27, born Staff., Audley

James Bloor,  son,

age 4 m.,  born Staff,  Burslem

Enoch Eldon?,  Lodger, Unm.,

age 21, Carpenter, Master with 1 Apprentice, born Staff., Wolstanton

There's a marriage on Staffordshire BMD for a James Bloor to Mary Riley at Wolstanton, St Margaret, in 1848.

I have also found the following entry in 1851 for an Eliza Bloore, widow living in Burslem at Holehouse, this casts a slight doubt on the 1841 entry being our Bloor family as shown to be resident in the house are both son and daughter, James and Ann -

Eliza Bloore, Head, Wid,

age 45, Housework, born Staffordshire, Burslem

James Bloore, son, Mar,

Potter, age 24, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Ann Bloore,  daughter, Marr, age 22, Potter, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Eliza Bloore,  daur,

age 18 Potter, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Esekiah Bloore,  son,

age 2, born Staffordshire, Burslem

also living in the house on the same schedule number but not quoted as being lodgers or boarders were Richard Little, his wife, Sarah and children Henry and Richard.  This might be the mother of James and Ann Bloor, as it has been known for parents to include their offspring even when they are married and have moved away from their original family home.

I have found an entry which might be James and Mary in the 1861 Census living at No.34 Albion Street, Burslem

James Bloor, Head, Mar,

age 34, Glassmaker & Grocer, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Mary Bloor, Wife, Mar,

age 37, born Staffordshire, Audley

James Bloor,  son, age 10, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Enoch Bloor, son, age 8, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem

Sarah A. Bloore,  daur,

age 6, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem

George Bloor, son, age 4, Scholar, born Staffordshire, Burslem Joseph Bloor, son, age 2,  born Staffordshire, Burslem Henry Bloor, son, age 3mo,  born Staffordshire, Burslem Hannah Plant, Serv. Un, age 18, Gen. Serv., born Staffordshire, Burslem

I thought I'd try to discover whether this was 'our' Bloor family by trying to find the marriage of Eliza - I found 2 possibilities and sent for them both. I thought that perhaps Eliza Bloor may have re-married - I had found a marriage for an Eliza Bloor to a James Thomson registered at Stoke on Trent, Vol 17 page 182 - I have sent for both the marriage certificates.  I have found an entry in the 1871 Census for James Thompson with wife Eliza who was born in Burslem Staffs - they are living in Macclesfield, Cheshire at Union Road, Company's Wharf, Macclesfield:

James Thompson, Head, Mar, age 52, Wharfinger, born Cheshire, Macclesfield Eliza Thompson, Wife, Mar, age 52,  born Staffs, Burslem Eliza Thompson, daur, Un., age 22,  Silk Factory Worker, born Cheshire, Macclesfield Febecca Thompson, daur, Un., age 18,  Silk Factory Weaver, born Cheshire, Macclesfield
James Thompson, Son, age 17, Un., Silk Warehouseman, born Cheshire, Macclesfield Emma Thompson, daur, Un., age 15,  Silk Factory Worker, born Cheshire, Macclesfield Helena Thompson, daur, age 10,  Scholar, born Cheshire, Macclesfield Jane Thompson, daur, age 8,  Scholar, born Cheshire, Macclesfield

However the two marriage certificates arrived but none showed Hamlet Bloor(e) as the father of the bride. The above Eliza's father was Solomon Bloor, a Boatman - Eliza and James were both shown as "of full age"; James's profession was given as Green Grocer; their residence was shown as High Street; and James' father was James Thompson, a Green Grocer.

The other Eliza Bloor was age 19 a spinster and the marriage took place in the Parish Church of Burslem on 1 July 1855; both residences were shown as simply "Burslem"; her father was Charles Bloor, Potter; she married Samuel Woodhouse, age 21 a Crate Maker whose father was James Woodhouse also a Cratemaker. Witnesses were Daniel and Sarah Ball.

So the search goes on . . .
