FRANCIS GASH 1837-1900

Part of the Jackson Family History Research

The first mention I found of Francis Gash was in the 1841 Census shown below; Francis was the daughter of David and Elizabeth Gash nee Graves.  Her brother, William Gash, was my Great Grandfather. For more information regarding the Gash family, please click the link at the start of this page.

* The occupation column had ditto marks under "Ag Lab" - even for baby George!  IGI has an entry  for Frances Gash baptised 5 Mar 1837,  parents David and Elizabeth Gash at Langriville, Lincolnshire, quite near to Kirton Holme. David and Elizabeth baptised their older children at Kirton Parish Church - the family seemed to have moved around quite a bit, most likely due to following the work, so I need to look for the rest of the children's baptisms in other parish records.

In the 1851 Census, Francis is shown to be living away from home, nearby, in Fosdyke, Lincolnshire - at Fosdyke Turnpike, More's Dam House:

Sarah Blancher, age 81, widow, a farmer of 24 acres. Born Algakirk, LIN Robert Blancher, Unm, Age 25?, Employed at home "on farm" F.S. Born Fosdyke, LIN. Fanny Gash, Servt, age 14. House Servt; born Kirton, LIN

In the 1861 Census, I've found a Francis Gash, lodging at Parkinson Street, Nottingham:

Sarah Bloxam, Head, Unmarr, age 24, Dress Maker, Born Leceiestershire, Ayleston

Ann Bloxam, Sister, Unmarr, age 26, Shirt Maker, Born Leceiestershire, Ayleston

Frances Gash, Lodger, Unmarr, age 24, Dress Maker, born Lincolnshire, Kirton End

Elizabeth Bloxam, Daughter, Unmarr, age 1,  Born Nottinghamshire, Nottingham

Meanwhile in the 1861 Census entry which gives details of Francis Gash's parents, David and Elizabeth Gash, there is a child listed as their granddaughter -

"Eliza, age 5, granddaughter, a  scholar, born Kirton, LIN"

Whilst searching Kirton in Holland parish records I found the following entry. I have been trying to discover who were the parents of Eliza but I couldn't trace her in the birth indexes nor in the 1871 Census unless this is her - Louisa Gash, daughter of David and Elizabeth's daughter, Frances:

Searching FreeBMD for a birth registration taking place about 1856, I found only one registration taking place in the Boston registration area (includes Kirton in Holland) -

Births Mar 1856 - GASH Louisa  Boston  7a  341

This matches the above baptism record; there was a death registered at Boston in June 1856, but this was for an unnamed Gash female.

I couldn't find Louisa nor Frances Gash in the 1871 Census until I searched Ancestry.co.uk for Frances, using no surname, giving approximate date of birth, and born Kirton, Lincolnshire with no positive results; then I tried with the 1st name 'Fanny'. An entry appeared for a Fanny Wragg, born Kirton. Looking at the original it showed  Fanny with husband James Wragg (born Coventry) and a daughter Louisa Wragg (born Kirton). The family were residing at 59 Upper Hospital Road, Birmingham:

James Wragg, Head, Mar, 34, Stone Mason, born Coventry, Warwicks Fanny Wragg, Wife, Mar, 34, Dressmaker, born Lincolns., Kirton Louisa Wragg, Dau, Unm., 15, Paper box maker, born Lincolns., Kirton

There was a marriage on Freebmd registered at West Bromwich, December 1863, 6b page 955 for Frances Gash and James Wragg.

In the 1881 Census the Wragg family were living at 12 Tenby Street, Birmingham with a grandson!!:

James Wragg, Head, Mar, 44, Stone Mason, born Warwicksh, Coventry Fanny Wragg, Wife, Mar, 44, born Lincolnsh., Kirton David Gash, Grandson,  7, born Lincolnsh., Kirton

But Louisa wasn't present and I could not find an entry in the 1881 census for Louisa, using all the different permutations - nor could I find a death or a marriage on Freebmd.  I did however find a birth on Freebmd for the above mentioned David Gash, but not born in Lincolnshire. There is an entry for a David Gash, registered in Birmingham March 1874, 6d, page 199.  In the following and subsequent census entries David is shown to be born in Birmingham NOT Kirton, Lincolnshire. Thanks to a descendant of David Gash

The family had moved again by the time of the 1891 Census - they were living at 2 Pope Street, Birmingham:

James Wragg, Head, Mar, age 54, Stone Mason, (Neither employee nor employed), born Warwick'e, Coventry Fanny Wragg, Wife, Mar, 54, Coffee Cook shop keeper,  born Lincoln'e, Kirton David Gash, Grandson,  S., 17, Stone Mason, born Birmingham

I couldn't find either James or Fanny Wragg in the 1901 Census, but looking for their deaths on Freebmd I found that James Wragg's death was registered at Birmingham in the December quarter of 1891 at the age of 54 - vol 6d, page 20; and Fanny Wragg's death was registered in Birmingham during March quarter of 1900, age 63, vol 6d, page 164.

Their grandson, David Gash married Caroline Wood - registered in Birmingham, December quarter of 1899, vol 6d, page 356. In 1895 their son Walter John Gash was born.

There is an entry in the 1891 Census which I'm almost certain is Louisa Gash. Living as the wife of John Rollason at 5 Ct, 317 Fern Street, Birmingham:

John Rollason, Head, Mar, age 31,  ? Worker, (employed), born Warwickshire, Birmingham Louisa Rollason, Wife, Mar, 29,  ? Worker, employed,  54,  born Warwickshire, Birmingham Frederick Rollason, Son, 3, born Warwickshire, Birmingham  Arthur Rollason, Son, 1, born Warwickshire, Birmingham

Louisa didn't marry John Rollason until 1898. I obtained a copy of their marriage certificate where for her father she has stated her grandfather, David Gash and witnesses were her son, David and his 1st wife, Caroline:

Looking for Louisa's son David Gash in the 1901 Census, I found he had married again and was residing 80 Carlisle Street, Birmingham:

David Gash, Head,  M., 27, Stone Mason, Worker, born Bir'm, War. Mary Gash, Wife, M., 21, born Hull, Yorks Eugene Gash, Son,  8 mo,  born Bir'm, War.

Caroline, his first wife had died; her death was registered in Birmingham, the December quarter of 1898, she was age 23.

In 1901 the Rollinson family were living in Court 27, Irving Street, Birmingham -

John Rollinson, Head,  M., 42, Corporation Labourer, Worker, born B'ham Louisa Rollinson, Wife, M., 45, born Lincon, Kirton Walter Gash, Gdson,  5,  born B'ham.
Harry Brase, Boarder, M., 34, Bricklayers Labourer, Worker, born B'ham Adelaide Brase, Wife, M., 26, born Stafford, Winsbury George Brase, Son, 4, born B'ham Earnest Brase, Son, 1, born B'ham

David does not seem to be present in the 1911 Census - I have found his wife living with her parents at 9 Pope Street, Birmingham with 2 children:

William James, Head, 59, Married, Boot & Shoe Maker, Worker, born Northampton Elizabeth James*, Wife, age 59, Married 5 years, no children, born Birmingham Rose Emma James, Daughter, single, pearl Button worker, born Birmingham
Mary Gash, Daughter, 31, Married 9 years, 2 children, 2 living**, Tin plate worker, born Yorks, Hull Alfred Gash, grandson, age 8, School, born Birmingham Leslie Gash, Grandson, age 5, School, born Birmingham
* Elizabeth is probably James's 2nd wife.
** The enumerator had included the Marriage/children details alongside Mary's entry and then crossed the information out with red ink. There was a dash in the "No. of children died column" - see below

I next looked for clues in the Freebmd and found that Eugene had died, registered Birmingham, June quarter of 1907, vol. 6d, page 80; and that David's wife, Mary Gash died in 1912, age 31 - registered Birmingham March 1912, vol 6d page 119.

But where is David? . . . I have been corresponding with a descendant of David Gash, the granddaughter of David and Caroline's son, Walter John Gash. She has discovered that Walter John Gash emigrated with David, his father but they did not stay together very long.

Searching on the Canadian Collections website, I found the attestation papers for Walter John Gash
