ELIZABETH GASH 1833-1891

Part of the Jackson Family History Research

Elizabeth Gash was baptised at Kirton-in-Holland, Lincolnshire as follows - daughter of David and Elizabeth Gash.  Her brother, William Gash, was my Great Grandfather.

 K'n End is Kirton End

Elizabeth was aged 8 at the time of the 1841 Census living in Kirton-in-Holland, Lincolnshire with her parents

In the 1851 Census, she is shown to be living away from home, nearby, in Swineshead, Lincolnshire -

Elizabeth is still working away in 1861 - found in the Census working as a Cook in Wyberton, which is still quite close to Kirton, the address is shown as "Old St. Way":

Sarah Martin, Head, Widdow, age 71, Independent, born Lincoln, Grimsby

Elizabeth Gash, Ser, Unm, age 26, Cook, born Lincoln, Kirton

Mary Ann Taylor, Ser, Unm, age 17, House Maid, born Lincoln, Wrangle.

Elizabeth was shortly to marry; there's an entry on the FreeBMD Marriage index records for April 1863, Registered at Boston, marrying William Smith - vol 7a; page 655.  Marcus Thornton, William and Elizabeth's 2 x Great Grandson informed me that William's name was William Needham Smith, Needham being his mother's maiden name and continued on down the family.

In the 1871 Census records, Elizabeth, now married to William Needham Smith was living in Frampton, their address given as Frampton Road, residing with them was Margaret Jackson, a widow, aged 100 years!

William Smith, Head, Mar, aged 37, an Agricultural Labourer, born Lincolns, Kirton

Elizabeth Smith, wife, Mar, aged 35, born Lincolns, Kirton

George Smith, son, aged 5, Scholar, born Lincolns, Wyberton William Smith, son, aged 3, born Lincolns, Frampton James Smith, son, aged 1, born Lincolns, Frampton

Margaret Jackson, Lodger, W, aged 100, born  Lincolns, Leake

The Smith family were living in Wyberton on Wyberton Road - the 1881 Census shows:

William Smith, Head, Mar, aged 45,  Labourer, born Lincolnshire, Carrington

Elizabeth Smith, wife, Mar, aged 46, born Lincolnshire, Kirton

Charles Smith, son, aged 9, Scholar, born Lincolnshire, Frampton

Walter Smith, son, aged 5, Scholar, born Lincolnshire, Frampton

Elizabeth Smith, Daughter, aged 3, born Lincolnshire, Frampton

* William Needham Smith is Marcus's great grandfather, he moved to Sheffield and became a tailor.

Finding the Smith Family in 1891, I discovered Elizabeth had died - William's status was shown as Widower.  They were still living in Wyberton "Near Sea Bank", the previous entry was "New Inn" -

William Smith, Head, Widr, aged 55, Agricultural Labourer, born Lincoln, Carrington David Smith, son, S, aged 19, Agricultural Labourer, born Lincoln, Frampton Elizabeth Smith, Daughter, S, aged 13, "Keeps her fathers house" born Lincoln, Frampton George Smith, Grandson, aged 3,  born Lincolnshire, Wyberton

Searching Free BMD, the most likely looking death for Elizabeth Smith was registered at Boston in March 1891 - age 57 vol 71 page 295.

* William is working in Sheffield by 1891 as a tailor at 83 Sutton Street, Sheffield -

Mary Wastinage, Head, Wid, aged 59, Boarding House Keeper, born Notts, Sutton on Trent Florence Warburton, Daughter, Single, aged 24, born Yorks, Sheffield Tom Marshall, Boarder, single, aged 24, Grocers Assistant, Employed, born Derbysr, Heanor Wm Smith, Boarder, single, aged 23, Tailor, Employer, born Lincoln, Frampton Geo. Marcus knows of the same family story as was talked about by my Mother and Great Aunts.  That J G Graves who came from Lincolnshire to eventually live and start a business in Sheffield was the nephew of Elizabeth Graves, who married David Gash in Kirton in 1830.  John George Graves became a great benefactor to the City of Sheffield, donating land, property and pictures; the latter to the Graves Art Gallery in the centre of the city. So far no one has found a connection to substantiate this story.  Marcus was told that William Needham Smith had moved to Sheffield around the same time as John George Graves.  J G Graves obituary article in the Sheffield Telegraph of 19 July 1945, states:

He was a native of Horncastle, Lincolnshire and his boyhood was spent in the West Riding, at Heckmondwyke. He was educated at Batley Grammar School, and at the age of 14 he came to Sheffield and was apprenticed to a watchmaker.

When he was 21 he started in business on his own.  His first shop was at West Bar from which he moved successfully to Furnival Street and Arundel Street.

Here's J G Graves as a 5-year old living with his parents at Market Place, Horncastle in 1871:

In the 1881 Census John George was 15 and was living in Sheffield at 165 No.2 Ct. Gibralter Street with the Watchmaker, William Wichman, as an Apprentice Watchmaker:

Marcus has found a baptism on the IGI of an Elizabeth Graves in Hull where the parents were Robert Graves and Mary - In all census records, shown on the Gash Family page, Elizabeth stated she was born in Kirton, Lincs, except for the one entry in 1851, where it was stated "Sculcoates" in Yorkshire.
