Betty Micklethwaite 1820-1901

Betty Micklethwaite was born 2 September 1820 and baptised in the Glass House, Near Bolsterstone.  (See copy of entry) Betty was the first child of my 2 x Great Grandparents, Benjamin and Sarah Micklethwaite.  Her sister, Harriett, was my Great Grandmother.

Here's Betty, at Glasshouse in the 1841 Census:

William Austwick, age 73, Ag Lab, born Yorks

Hannah Austwick, age 65,  born Yorks William Austwick, age 40, Waller, born Yorks Betty Mickalthwait  age 20, Female Servant

On 3rd April, 2006, at Barnsley Archives, I found some documents relating to Benjamin and Sarah's daughter, Betty.  Apparently Betty was pregnant and the Overseers were concerned that they would have to provide the finance for Betty's unborn child.  It must have been an absolutely harrowing ordeal for Betty in 1840, being an unmarried mother, 'on the parish' having to appear before the Overseers in order to tell them who was the father.  Apparently in some cases, women who helped during the birth of an illegitimate child, were told to ask the pregnant mother to disclose the father's name at a crucial time during the birth of the child - they were told to threaten to withdraw help if the name was withheld.

The first document sent by the Overseers of Hunshelf was to John Dransfield, a Solicitor acting on behalf of Hunshelf Parish -

There is another document a Bastardy Filiations Order - a somewhat upsetting document which names the father of Betty's child as John Haigh of Hunshelf, a Stone Mason. The Overseers of the Poor of Hunshelf, in order to ensure that John Haigh contributed to the upkeep of Betty Micklethwaite's child, Amos, sought through the Quarter Sessions a Filiations Order ordering John to pay for the upkeep of the child:

BASTARDY FILIATION ORDER.
